Mission Statement

For over 40 years, the USENIX Association has brought together the community of engineers, system administrators, scientists and technicians working on the cutting edge of the computing world. The USENIX conferences have become the essential meeting grounds for the presentation and discussion of the most advanced information on the development of all aspects of computing systems. USENIX supports its members' professional and technical development through a variety of ongoing activities, including conferences on such topics as security, system administration, operating systems, file and storage technologies, and more.

About This Cause

A community of collaborators, USENIX began in 1975 as the original UNIX users group. It has since evolved to become the Advanced Computer Systems Association, a registered 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization. A small staff serves the membership, organizes the conferences, produces the publications, and maintains the website. All conference program committees consist of volunteers so that USENIX is able to operate with minimal administrative costs. Since 1975, USENIX has been a trusted community where academic, government, and industry researchers in advanced computing come together to learn, connect, and innovate. We are dedicated to promoting technical excellence, research innovation, practical application, open access, and diverse participation in the world of advanced computing systems, because we believe people and technology working together can enhance the quality of life around the world. We invite you to invest in your career or business, and the world around you, by becoming a USENIX member or donor today. USENIX’s history of is one of firsts and it has been instrumental in the growth of advanced computing around the globe. Here is where computer researchers first heard about software languages Java and Perl, and open source desktop environment GNOME. We produced the first conferences on both supercomputing and computer security, and hosted the first workshops on C++, mobile computing, and electronic commerce. USENIX is where the creation of worldwide USENET discussion groups was announced, and the funding for the Internet service provider UUNET was secured. Today we annually serve 250,000 individuals from over 50 countries. Our 3,500 members and donors, plus 450 volunteers, support our staff of just twelve professionals working with a budget of $4 million. Executive Director Casey Henderson first joined USENIX in 2002, and moved into her current leadership role in 2014. Specialization, Collaboration, and Innovation in the Digital Age The success of the computer revolution has brought together people around the globe and impacted every aspect of human life. However, as the technology that sustains our world becomes increasingly complex, the need for both specialized knowledge and interdisciplinary collaboration has increased. More than ever, technical excellence and innovation depend on the free flow and sharing of information. At USENIX we believe the solution is to provide computer researchers the skills and support they need to succeed, and to build the capacity of the advanced computing field. For over thirty years, USENIX has · -produced professional conferences and training events for academic, government, and industry computer researchers. · - facilitated community building to enhance learning and collaboration within and across disciplines. · - supported research innovation through vendor neutral programs, open access to our growing digital library, and publishing high-quality research. USENIX is a committed supporter of educational and community projects, allocating as much as $1 million per year to community outreach, discounted training fees and grants. We are dedicated to ensuring diverse participation in advance computing, particularly by women. A 2011 CRA survey revealed less than 12% of US computer science bachelor degrees were awarded to women. USENIX’s Women in Advanced Computing (WiAC) initiative provides subsidized training, professional networking, career mentorship, and partnership programs for women computer researchers at all stages of their careers. We also honor members of the community with three prestigious annual awards, which recognize public service and technical excellence. Services to Help Computer Researches Succeed USENIX’s over 30 annual conferences and workshops bring together emerging and established leaders from over 50 countries working on computer security, privacy, storage, networking, and other critical issues. Our yearly LISA Conference brings together system administrators and engineers to learn and share with each other, develop best practices, and further their careers. Our online job board and salary survey are always in high demand. USENIX facilitates professional networking and community building to enhance learning and collaboration within and across disciplines. Our individual members, as well as our educational and organizational partners, represent the brightest minds working in advanced computing today. Our donors and supporters make this ongoing collaboration possible.
