Mission Statement

SHARE is a national, nonprofit 501(c)(3) peer-led organization that provides support services, information/education, navigation services, referrals, and resources to everyone impacted by breast, ovarian, uterine, and cervical cancer. The mission of SHARE is to help everyone with breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, or metastatic breast cancer, regardless of race, socioeconomics, gender, identity, status, or other demographics, effectively address the emotional and practical issues that arise from a cancer diagnosis and obtain the support they need to feel less isolated, better informed, and more empowered as advocates because no one should go through cancer alone. Approximately 350,000 times each year, SHARE programs touch women and families affected by these cancers, as well of members of the general public, through support groups, education programs, outreach initiatives, and our national toll-free Helpline.

About This Cause

Making targeted efforts to reach all women affected by breast, ovarian, cervical, and uterine cancer, including metastatic breast cancer, SHARE places a special emphasis on partnerships and programming for women from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Through our Ambassador Programs, AfroSHARE, LatinaSHARE, and ChineseSHARE, we expressly serve women of color, with a focus on low-income, medically underserved, women residing in all five boroughs of New York City and the surrounding metropolitan area. Our Ambassadors conduct hundreds of visits to community organizations, older adult/senior centers, community centers, consulates, health fairs, food pantries, health centers, and other venues annually to deliver educational workshops, presentations, and informational materials. Our outreach and education programs reach and engage more than 35,000 people each year. Through our national toll-free Helpline, staffed by peer volunteers, we serve over 6000 individuals each year and our online educational programs, which include webinars, podcasts, and novelas, receive over 150,000 views/downloads. Our programs include: ---SHARE Breast and Ovarian Cancers National Helplines: Information and emotional support offered by trained survivor/volunteers seven days a week from 9:30 AM to 9:00 PM in 15 languages to callers from across the country. No other program offers support for ovarian cancer patients by ovarian survivors.  --Support Groups: Trained survivor-facilitators offer 34 groups at our NY office and throughout the New York City area in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Support groups are also offered by phone and online. --SHARE Ambassador Program: A grassroots community organizing effort designed to reach out to African-American, Latina and immigrant women in medically underserved communities throughout the five boroughs of NYC. The purpose of these efforts is to reduce outcome disparities in patients with breast or ovarian cancers through bi-lingual education and support initiatives. --LatinaSHARE: We offer a Spanish language helpline, support groups and educational programs. Recently, SHARE has expanded its reach by working with the Ecuadorean, Mexican, and Peruvian consulates. -- Metastatic Breast Cancer Program: SHARE offers the most comprehensive program for women with metastatic disease including telephone support groups, one-on-one support, education programs and networking events for women with metastatic disease and their caregivers. --Pink and Teal Workplace Seminar program, whereby we have survivors visit Corporations, Organizations, Churches, Civic Centers, Police and Fire Depts in NYC. and speak to groups of women, NOT YET DIAGNOSED, and educate them about the need to undergo mammography exams and know how to recognize the symptoms of Ovarian Cancer (the silent killer). --Patient Navigator Program: SHARE provides bilingual survivor-navigators at the breast clinics of St. Luke’s-Roosevelt and Bellevue Hospitals. This program reduces healthcare disparities and treatment delays by providing a “continuum of breast care” to women from an initial abnormal radiology result through post-treatment survivorship. --Caregiver Circle: Our programs for family, friends, and caregivers provides a helpline, support group and one-on-one counseling. These programs offer a continuum of supportive care from awareness through survivorship, from recurrence through confronting metastatic disease, from family and caregiver support through end-of-life concerns. SHARE programs strive to meet patients ‘where they are’ literally -- in the healthcare setting, in the workplace, on line and over our telephone Helplines – as well as ‘where they are’ emotionally in their cancer journey. SHARE Breast and Ovarian Cancers Helplines serve as an effective ‘point of entry’ to SHARE-sponsored support groups and other assistive programs and to the extensive network of resource referrals.
