Mission Statement

The Dwelling Place of NY, in the spirit of its founders, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, advocates for women experiencing homelessness as a result of domestic violence or other traumatic event. In an atmosphere of unconditional welcome, caring, compassion and respect we provide transitional housing, healthy food, workforce training, medical services and other supportive services so they can rebuild their lives and once again feel safe.

About This Cause

The Dwelling Place of NY was established in 1977 in response to the growing number of homeless women in New York City. At that time there were many options for homeless men to find shelter, yet very few for women. Five Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY, troubled by the site of homeless women eating out of their garbage bins, received permission from their religious congregation to open a shelter for women. Securing the use of the building at 409 W. 40th Street from the Archdiocese of NY, the shelter was opened on October 4, 1977. Unfortunately, as poverty exacerbated and Covid ripped through our City, the pictures from 1977 were eerily the same in 2020. The difference was the huge number of domestic violence cases in NYC and few options for women in desperate need. At any given time, 15 women, 20 years or over, call The Dwelling Place home. Our confidential domestic violence shelter provides healing environments for individuals leaving a dangerous situation. We give survivors of abuse the space to heal. Each woman receives an individualized care plan , support, and guidance to help her build a sustainable, self-supported lifestyle. We provide a secure environment where victims can begin the long journey becoming survivors The Dwelling Place also hosts Wednesday evening dinners for our community. Everyone is welcome to grab a pantry bag of shelf stable items and a hot meal. Each week, we serve between 250- 300 people which is desperately needed in our community.
