Mission Statement
Sanctuary for Families is dedicated to the safety, healing and self-determination of victims of domestic violence and related forms of gender violence. Through comprehensive services for our clients and their children, and through outreach, education and advocacy, we strive to create a world where freedom from gender violence is a basic human right.
About This Cause
Founded in 1984 as a small network of safe homes, Sanctuary for Families is now New York State’s largest not-for-profit provider of wrap-around services exclusively for survivors of domestic violence, sex trafficking, and related forms of gender-based violence, as well as child victims/witnesses. Sanctuary’s 250 staff work throughout New York City to deliver counseling, crisis intervention, shelter, legal representation and advice, and career training to 8,500 survivors and their children each year. We also collaborate with NYC Health + Hospitals to serve trafficking survivors through public hospitals and community locations across the city. Sanctuary’s community outreach and training reaches 11,000 concerned New Yorkers. Our work is leveraged by the support of 3,000 volunteers annually, including more than 1,000 pro bono attorneys. Sanctuary’s individualized approach helps survivors on their journeys from immediate safety, to stability and self-sufficiency. All services work on this continuum: from survival services such as shelter and crisis counseling after fleeing abuse; to stability efforts such as help obtaining public benefits or securing affordable housing; to services that help clients access the City’s rich economic opportunities such as helping immigrant clients attain employment authorization and legal status. Most notably, our intensive workforce program helps survivors access living-wage jobs with opportunities for wage growth and career advancement. Above all, Sanctuary meets clients where they are, without judgment, and gives them tools to achieve their own goals.
