Mission Statement
Westchester Disabled on the Move, Inc. (WDOMI) is a 501c3 nonprofit run by and for people with disabilities in Westchester County, New York. WDOMI was founded in 1984 to empower people with disabilities to control their own lives; advocate for civil rights and a barrier-free society; encourage people with disabilities to participate in the political process; educate government, business and other entities and society as a whole to understand, accept and accommodate people with disabilities; create an environment that inspires self-respect; and reinforce the value each individual has regardless of physical and mental capabilities.
About This Cause
WDOMI staff members offer free, comprehensive individualized advocacy to consumers with disabilities needing assistance with housing, benefits, long term care, and service coordination. They also work on initiatives that promote independence for people with physical, mental, visible and invisible disabilities. Team members personally advocate for clients dealing with Medicaid and other service providers or who are trying to transition out of nursing homes and institutional settings to their own independent homes in the community. They help each individual navigate the complexities of getting affordable, accessible housing and the healthcare and other services people with disabilities need to live independently and with dignity. WDOMI is an Independent Living Center (ILC), part of a network of non-residential ILC service and advocacy centers dedicated to upholding the rights of people with disabilities. WDOMI assists any individual with low income or special needs without consideration of age, race, or ethnicity. While there are many organizations that serve the disabled population, WDOMI is uniquely positioned to do so because it is administered and staffed primarily by people with disabilities.
