Mission Statement
Founded in 1984 by Brother Brian Carty, FSC, De La Salle Academy is a private, independent, non-sectarian middle school located in Manhattan. The school’s student body includes youngsters from all five boroughs of New York City. De La Salle is the only private, independent school in New York City for academically talented, economically less advantaged boys and girls in grades six through eight. Our admissions policy is need-blind; each year we have to raise over 90% of the school’s annual budget from sources other than tuition.
About This Cause
De La Salle is the only school of its kind in New York that provides each student with rigorous academic training, while fostering positive student-teacher interaction. The student body is comprised of students commuting from neighborhoods all over the metropolitan New York City area, including East and West Harlem, the South Bronx, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and many neighborhoods in Queens. The school provides these students equal access to a top-quality education. De La Salle expects its students to prosper academically, socially, and emotionally, through the development of each child's mind, body, heart, and spirit. In addition to math, Spanish, language arts, biology, and physical science, students are required to take courses in American studies, geography, and public speaking. They also participate in numerous community and group activities. Electives include chemistry, astronomy, global studies, Latin, and drama. Since its inception, De La Salle has provided and continues to provide academically talented, economically less advantaged adolescents the spiritually nurturing and academically challenging environment they need to ensure bright futures. Students take with them the ideals and values taught at the academy through high school and beyond.
