About This Cause

New York City's Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (PCDC), led by Founder and Artistic Director Igal Perry, has been a powerhouse of expression and innovation since 1983. As a repertory company, PCDC is committed to amplifying diverse artistic voices from both established and emerging choreographers. This philosophy, paired with virtuosic and dynamic performers, has made PCDC a premiere contemporary dance company in New York City for 40 years. Founded in tandem with Peridance Center, a dance education hub in Union Square, the Company made its New York City debut in 1985 at the Riverside Dance Festival. Since then, PCDC has performed at the Joyce Theater, BAM, Lincoln Center, the KnJ Theater at Peridance, and more. The company has held extensive tours both nationally and internationally, including to Jacob's Pillow, the Ent Center for the Arts in Colorado Springs, Spring to Dance St. Louis, the Staller Center at Stonybrook University, the Butler Arts Center in Indianapolis, the Suzanne Dellal Dance Centre for Dance and Theater in Tel Aviv, Ballet Internacional de Buenos Aires, Florence Dance Festival, Seoul International Dance Festival, and many more. In addition to Perry's work, described by the NYTimes as "blessedly inventive," PCDC is grounded in its unwavering commitment to collaboration and artistic innovation. The Company has often served as a launchpad for choreographic careers. Over just the past decade, the Company has premiered new works by 27 choreographers and engaged over 50 musicians and composers. Public and educational programming are also vital to PCDC, with sought-after open workshops, free performances, multidisciplinary university residencies, and our DanceBreak initiative. Since DanceBreak’s launch in 2016, company dancers have taught repertory, modern technique, improvisation, and composition to over 1,500 NYC public school students. With an holistic pedagogical approach, PCDC increases access to contemporary dance and cultivates the next generation of dance artists. The company continuously offers free classes and outdoor performances as well through organizations such as CityParks’ SummerStage, Broadway Cares, and the Union Square Partnership, contributing to more accessible dance performances across New York City. Over the last 10 years, PCDC has worked to expand its base of support, and has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, Harkness Foundation, Google, Jewish Communal Fund, and many individual donors.
