Mission Statement
Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is a culturally diverse, multi-arts, non-profit organization that provides a forum for community, artists, and youth to transform creativity into vision. Our Education, Exhibitions, Artist Studios, and Presenting Programs cultivate leadership in an urban environment and stewardship of our natural resource — The Bronx River.
About This Cause
For more than 37 years BRAC has been an anchor for art, culture, and environmental and urban revitalization in the West Farms neighborhood of the South Central Bronx. We provide a wide array of rich cultural services including: art educational programs for youth and adults, contemporary art exhibitions, individual studios for professional artists, performing arts presentations, and a co-working space for emerging entrepreneurs in the creative and environment industries. These activities assure that opportunities for leadership and enhanced quality of life are available to our ethnically diverse, but underserved and economically challenged, population. Our goal is to encourage residents to engage in creative activism toward the revitalization and future of their communities. Our Education program offers affordable (or free) year-round out-of-school time classes in the fine arts and digital media, for youth, parent-child teams and adults, including weekend and evening classes. Our Teen Project Studio +2.0 (for ages 15 - 26) is an intensive, free by application, program that teaches 21st Century skills in the technology-based creative industries in our fully equipped “Maker Space” studios. BRAC’s contemporary art exhibition program presents five or more exhibitions annually in a wide range of aesthetic practices that more often also address socially relevant concerns. Our performing arts program offers an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional performing arts including music, dance, theater and avant-guard performing art. With the reopening of our restored facility in 2018 we reinstated our professional artist studios program, offering nine 400 sq. ft. individual studios for up to two-year residencies. Included in our restoration designs we created a plan for a “co-working” space for emerging entrepreneurs (particularly Bronx-based) in the creative and environmental industries, which is now ready to be launched in 2023. To coordinate our education, presenting and entrepreneurial programs, we offer monthly artist talks in association with our exhibition, free outdoor art workshops for community residents, film screenings and more, in our new ground floor multi-purpose events space. What makes BRAC unique is our focus on local as well as global environmental issues as one of the first interdisciplinary art and environmental justice programs in the nation.
