Mission Statement
Established in 1983, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is one of America's premier flamenco companies. Our mission is to promote flamenco as a living, evolving art form and vital part of Hispanic heritage; produce and perform high quality dance works; provide arts education programs that catalyze connections among young people; and nurture the next generation of flamenco artists and educators. The Company believes that the multicultural origins of flamenco, with influences from Arab, Jewish, Roma, Spanish, African and Latin American cultures, gives this dynamic art form a uniquely broad appeal, allowing us to entertain, educate and create connections with diverse audiences of 30,000 or more annually in our New York City home and across America.
About This Cause
Flamenco Vivo celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2023 and is one of the only US-based flamenco companies with a national scope to achieve this enduring milestone. Besides being one of the country’s longest-established flamenco organizations and one of very few decades-old Spanish dance companies founded and led by women, Flamenco Vivo may be most distinguished by our breadth of programming and commitment to diversity. Few dance companies of our size, offer the comprehensive scope of services that we maintain with the level of expertise that we bring to our work. Highlights of our programming include: CREATION & PERFORMANCE. Flamenco Vivo is dedicated to honoring the traditions of flamenco while expanding the form in new directions. We have premiered over 30 original works, commissioning outstanding artists from the US and abroad. In 2013, we launched a partnership with the Madrid Certamen for Spanish Dance & Flamenco, through which we offer a prize and choreographic residency in NYC to a top-ranked Certamen contestant. This allows Flamenco Vivo to introduce rising stars of Spanish dance to US audiences while fostering the work of emerging choreographers. We offer performances across NYC, including annual self-produced home seasons at The Joyce Theater and (le) Poisson Rouge, as well as community-based shows. We also hold 4-6 performances annually at our new Peña Flamenca NYC, an intimate pop-up series we created in different spaces of the Midtown Manhattan building that houses our office and studios. Our goal through this variety of presentations is to introduce more NYC audiences to world-renowned flamenco artists from the US and abroad while demonstrating the breadth of flamenco’s aesthetic possibilities. ARTS EDUCATION. Flamenco Vivo’s in-school residency and lecture-demonstration programs engage more than 20,000 K-12 students in over 40 NYC public schools each year, primarily targeting low-income and Spanish-speaking communities across the city. Our signature arts education curriculum uses flamenco, an art form influenced by the sounds and movements of many regions, to explore relationships between Spanish, Caribbean, African, and Latin American cultures. We also initiated a unique flamenco program for students with disabilities in several NYC District 75 schools, and are continually awarded competitive Department of Education contracts for extended residency programs in dozens of schools serving these students as well as English language learners. Additionally, Flamenco Vivo’s expertise has been engaged by other leading arts education organizations such as the Center for Arts Education, for dual-language instruction, and most recently the NYCDOE for the creation of culturally responsive curriculum for their new initiative Hidden Voices. In response to the pandemic, Flamenco Vivo developed online formats of our arts education programs which has led Flamenco Vivo to now offer virtual as well as in-person and hybrid formats, reaching more students than ever. TOURING. Flamenco Vivo’s touring over the past 40 years has raised the profile of flamenco across the US and brought the art form into the cultural mainstream. We perform at leading theaters and University venues, but also intentionally target under-reached communities, including many where we provide audiences with their first exposure to flamenco. FLAMENCO VIVO STUDIOS & EVOLUCIÓN ARTIST DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVES. Located in Midtown Manhattan, our facilities provide a home for the flamenco community and an important service to the field, with two sprung-wood floor studios designed expressly for percussive dance. One of very few spaces of its kind in NYC, Flamenco Vivo Studios hosts a range of classes and guest artist workshops. The studios also provide affordable, subsidized space to rent for companies and teachers who practice flamenco, tap, Mexican folklórico, Kathak, and other dance forms. In alignment with our mission to develop and promote new generations of Spanish dance artists, we also created Evolución, a robust set of programs that support flamenco artists at all career stages: Developing Artists, Cuadro, Consortium, and the Flamenco Certamen USA, a high-level competition for pre-professional dancers celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Modeled after our partner program, the prestigious Madrid Certamen in Spain, selected finalists perform in a dance competition held at Lincoln Center’s Bruno Walter Auditorium every October. All Flamenco Certamen USA participants receive rehearsal time at Flamenco Vivo Studios and training from professional mentors and musicians, while winners receive awards and opportunities for advanced study with our partners at the Madrid Certamen. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. Flamenco Vivo serves communities across NYC beyond our annual home seasons by mounting free performances and workshops for the public. We engage all age groups from children to seniors with a particular focus on disabled people, Spanish speakers, immigrants, and LGBTQ youth. We have delivered family programming in Brooklyn and Queens in partnership with organizations such as Centro Español, the Brooklyn Museum, and several public library branches. In addition, Flamenco Vivo has robust relationships with four NYC senior centers, including Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, where we have offered performances and a series of free workshops that promote wellness and social engagement for older adults. We have also conducted workshops at the Sadie Nash Leadership Project for high school youth of color. Flamenco Vivo has given free community performances in cooperation with partners such as the Bronx Music Heritage Center, St. Joseph’s College, Bronx Museum of Art, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, Queens College, and Battery Dance Festival.
