Mission Statement
The ARChive of Contemporary Music (ARC) is a not-for-profit archive, music library and research center located in New York City. Our mission is to collect, preserve and provide information on the popular music of all cultures and races throughout the world from 1945 to the present.
About This Cause
The ARC is the largest popular music collection in the United States, with more than 2.5 million sound recordings. Founded in 1985, our primary mission has been preservation. Our goal by 2020 is to open to the general public to allow students, educators, historians, musicians, authors, journalists, fans and the general public access to the world’s rich musical heritage. Besides our facility in Tribeca, we curate the sound collection at the Internet Archive in San Francisco. We have enlisted the support of leading figures in the entertainment industry, and created a prestigious Board of Advisors: Jellybean Benitez, Jonathan Demme, Brewster Kahle, Craig Kallman, Youssou N'Dour, Keith Richards, Nile Rodgers, Todd Rundgren, Fred Schneider, Martin Scorsese, Paul Simon and Mike Stoller. Previous Board Members include: David Bowie, Michael Feinstein, Ellie Greenwich, John Hammond, Jerry Leiber, Lou Reed and Jerry Wexler
