Mission Statement
The mission of the Center is to improve the lives of youth and families living in the Crotona section of the Bronx through programs that expand opportunities, develop leadership, and build community.
About This Cause
The Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center opened in 1997 to serve the Crotona community of The Bronx. Programs at the Center are born out of a thirty-year struggle to improve this neighborhood. The Center and its programs bare out the idea that committed individuals providing needed services to have the power to transform individuals and communities. Today the Center serves the Crotona / East Tremont / West Farms sections of The Bronx providing programs based on the need of the community. Right now our biggest need is helping to alleviate the food gap and families that are struggling due to the affects of COVID-19. Since March when COVID hit The Bronx and the rest of the City causing major shutdowns and put the City at a standstill. The Center continued to provide to the community. We continue to provide prepared meals to the community serving about 30-40 families a week, they can take as many meals as they need for their families. We accept donations of food, fresh produce, and clothing that we give away to the community. These donations are helpful especially as we are seeing our community changing and new families are coming in from different parts of the City and from around as refugees. We are kick-starting Heidi's Healthy Canasta Food Buying Club, where we purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local NYS farmers through GrowNYC. Donations will help us to provide shares for free or at a reduced price for families in need. A share of Heidi's Healthy Canasta is either $15, $18, or $20 depending on the household income, and each bag comes with 8-10 items depending on what is season and available. A share can feed at least a family of 2-4. Your donation will help us to continue to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to families in the Crotona / East Tremont Section of the Bronx. Donations can also go towards our Food Justice Club where we provided enrolled youth a stipend to come in 3x a week for a year. They get the opportunity to work on various projects focused around Food Security, food access, and environmental and social justice. Some of the work they focused on was creating a Hydroponic system that they built themselves, and creating a booklet that they will share with neighboring schools that speaks about the importance of nutrition and how to make their meals healthier at the schools and what families can do as well. This program has been a success for seven years and our funding will come to an end in September 2023 we are looking to raise money and reach out to foundations to continue their support in this program. It is extremely important to provide our youth with an alternative activity that keeps them off of the streets and discussing various topics that they are interested in.
