Mission Statement
The National Alliance for Musical Theatre (NAMT)’s mission is to nurture the creation, development and production of new musicals; to provide a forum for musical theatre professionals to share resources and exchange information; and to advocate for the imagination, diversity and joy unique to musical theatre. NAMT, a member service organization, is the only not-for-profit with national reach dedicated to serving the musical theatre community.
About This Cause
In 1985, leaders of the musical theatre community from around the country came together to draft the charter that created NAMT. Today NAMT has grown to 200 members across 30 states and abroad. With annual budgets ranging from $10,000 to $47,000,000, our members run the gamut from small theatres developing new shows to leading producers of classics. We reach and educate our membership through two annual Conferences, a webinar series, monthly emailed newsletters and other programming. The Fall Conference is typically new-works focused, as it is held in conjunction with the Festival of New Musicals each year. The Spring Conference typically focuses on either marketing or development topics in alternating years; the 2018 Spring Conference is marketing-focused and the 2019 Spring Conference will be development-focused. These conferences allow our membership to come together, discuss best practices and network. In addition, we support the creation, development and production of new musicals through programs like the Festival of New Musicals. We are able not only to nurture writers through the development process, using the vast expertise of our membership and the knowledge of the NAMT staff, but also to bring extraordinary new works to the attention of the country’s regional theatres, academic programs and producers. The Festival of New Musicals is unique among the new works festivals throughout the country because it is the only festival to bring together such a wide audience of professionals in the field while leaving the writers and shows free of future encumbering financial obligations. The Festival itself is only the beginning of the development process. After the Festival NAMT works to ensure the shows have a continued life beyond those 2 days, toward the ultimate goal of securing readings, workshops, full productions and more. The Festival has introduced 244 new musicals and 460 writers to the musical theatre community between 1989 and 2017. NAMT’s programs work synergistically to serve the diverse musical theatre community. The annual Fall Conference and Festival of New Musicals are the starting point: Members find a forum for discussion of opportunities and challenges in producing musical theatre at the Fall Conference. The Festival helps set writers up for success by showcasing presentations of their musicals with Broadway-caliber talent to producers and developers. Then, additional member service programs continue discussions begun at the Festival and Fall Conference, spark new conversations and ideas for our members and alumni writers and promote relationships of every variety—between writers and theatres; between small, developmental theatres and large producing organizations; between regional non-profits and commercial producers. In this way, NAMT acts as a catalyst for new works development and a launching pad for emerging writers, providing a range of options and progression paths for new musical advancement.
