New York Legal Assistance Group

NEW YORK, New York, 10004-4027 United States

Mission Statement

The New York Legal Assistance Group provides high quality, free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers who cannot afford attorneys.

About This Cause

NYLAG was founded in 1990 on the idea that low-income individuals can improve their lives dramatically if they are given access to the civil justice system. Our comprehensive range of services includes direct representation, case consultation, advocacy, community education, training, financial counseling, public policy, and impact litigation. NYLAG’s practice areas include public benefits, eviction and foreclosure prevention, consumer law, disaster relief, employment law, health care, immigration, elder law, Holocaust compensation, special education, end-of-life planning, financial counseling, LGBT rights, and matrimonial and family law for victims of domestic violence. We do not accept federal funding, which enables us to serve not only the abject poor, but also lower middle class and working poor individuals who cannot afford private attorneys – as well as undocumented immigrants.
