Mission Statement

Improving the treatment, quality of life and the long-term outlook for children and families affected by a brain or spinal cord tumor.

About This Cause

Mission Children's Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF), a non-profit organization, was founded in 1988 by dedicated parents, physicians and friends. Our mission is to improve the treatment, quality of life and long-term outlook for children with brain and spinal cord tumors through research, support, education, and advocacy for families and survivors. Support and Information through the journey A brain tumor diagnosis impacts the entire family forever. CBTF provides support and information at the time of diagnosis and is there for the whole family throughout the journey. Initially, families often feel completely alone and have more questions than answers. CBTF sends care kids to newly diagnosed families with a gift for each child (we don't want to forget the siblings), information including our book, A Resource Guide for Parents of Children with Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors, resources and inspirational letters from our Teen Leaders. There is often no one who can understand the brain tumor journey unless they have experienced it themselves. So CBTF's created the first brain tumor mentoring program in the country. Initially, parents were mentors, but the program has expanded to include survivors and siblings. Frequently teachers and employers need to learn about the impact of brain tumors. To ensure survivors reach their maximum potential, CBTF offers support, educational advocacy and employment guidance. Our Young Professionals Group is a critical part of the employment program. CBTF sponsors national adventure weekends and family events to build a support community. We created the only Father/Survivor weekend retreat, "Just Us," which, for many fathers, is the first time they have connected to other fathers. In addition to Just Us, CBTF provides camps for teens and young adults where survivors make life-long friendships and learn life skills, including assisting with school, careers, nutrition and exercise, and social skills. We also hold weekend adventure retreats to build community and memories further. We offer over 20 online groups a month for families and in-person groups in many cities. With your help, no matter where a family is, they will have access to support. One-fifth of children diagnosed with a brain tumor will not survive five years. CBTF is there for those families as well. In addition, we offer Parent and Sibling Mentors. We also have ongoing individual and group support. Research CBTF has awarded over $11 million in grants for basic and clinical research related to pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors to find a cure and eliminate the devasting late effects. As the founding funder of the Children's Brain Tumor Network (CBTN), CBTF is now responsible for the world's largest repository of pediatric brain tumor specimens with associated genetic data. CBTN encourages researchers worldwide (and from competing institutions) to collaborate on specimen-driven and data-driven projects to produce better treatments. Volunteers Meeting the challenge depends on the hard work of many dedicated friends, medical professionals and family members. IMPACT Your financial and volunteer support will assure no family goes through the childhood brain tumor journey alone while we search for a cure. Visit the CBTF website (www.cbtf.org) to donate, volunteer, and learn more about the incredible work provided to children and families suffering from this horrific disease.
