Mission Statement

Places is the journal of the Design History Foundation. It is our mission to provide a platform for powerful and well-resourced journalism that will advocate for the meaning, value, and role of design in creating better built environments for the present and the future. In our pages you will find writers, designers, and artists who are responding to the profound challenges of our time: environmental health and social inequity, climate change, resource scarcity, human migration, rapid technological innovation, and the erosion of the public sphere. These challenges demand that we rethink how we plan, design, construct, and maintain the built environment. They also demand that ambitious design research and practice move from the margins to the center of cultural discussion. As an essential and trusted resource on contemporary architecture, landscape, and urbanism, we harness the moral and investigative power of public scholarship to promote equitable cities and resilient landscapes.

About This Cause

Places is a leading journal of contemporary architecture, landscape, and urbanism, published by the Design History Foundation. We harness the moral and investigative power of public scholarship to promote equitable cities and resilient landscapes. The journal was founded as a print journal at MIT and Berkeley in 1983, and has been online and free as an independent nonprofit since 2009. Bridging from the university to the profession to the public, Places' articles combine the scope and immediacy of serious journalism with the precision and depth of scholarship. Places is led by three editors based in San Francisco, and governed by an international board of leading design educators and practitioners. The journal is supported by a network of leading design faculties around the world as well as institutional and individual donors.
