Mission Statement

The Abraham Initiatives strives to fulfill the promise of full and equal citizenship and complete equality of social and political rights for Israel’s Jewish and Arab citizens, as embodied in Israel's Declaration of Independence: a state which is the national homeland of the Jewish people and a full, complete and equal home for its Arab-Palestinian national minority; a state that exists peacefully alongside a Palestinian state fulfilling the national aspirations of the Palestinian people.

About This Cause

The Abraham Initiatives aims to create widespread positive social change in the field of Jewish-Palestinian relations within Israel. To this end, our initiatives focus on stimulating policy change in both national and local government, as well as state institutions and other key areas in Israeli society. Utilizing our methodology of "Advocacy through Action", our initiatives present models for policy change which can be adopted and tailored on a national scale. During this period of extremist right-wing governance, we are fighting tirelessly to maintain and expand government resources devoted to promoting equality and strengthening democratic institutions in Israel. Our programs include the following: SHARED LEARNING involves breaking down the separated school system in Israel and is inspired by a successful model operating in Northern Ireland. The Shared Learning program "twins" an Arab and Jewish classroom through a mutually chosen curricular topic, identified to be of importance to both schools. The Abraham Initiatives mentors the teachers and principals through this process, leading to a series of 8-10 shared classes, taught together by both teachers, and alternating in location between the two schools. This year 10 school pairs and over 1,000 students will take part in this program. SAFE COMMUNITIES targets the underlying causes of violence to promote greater security in the lives of Palestinian citizens. In recent years, crime and violence in Arab society have increased to unprecedented levels, with over 50% of violent crime in Israel effecting Arab citizens. Coupled with a history of under-policing and tense relations with the Israeli police, Arab communities are struggling to provide personal safety for their residents. In this field, the Abraham Initiatives runs models for community action and community-based policy. Through building capacity in local Arab leadership and educating Israel's National Police, the Abraham Initiatives has over a decade of the experience necessary to build safer communities. Our MIXED CITIES program operates in Israel's seven mixed cities -- nowhere do Jewish and Arab citizens live in closer proximity. Despite the potential for friction and conflict, these communities offer unique opportunities for collaboration and partnership. The Abraham Initiatives launched the Shared Cities Initiative to build partnerships at every level, and to provide a model to communities quickly becoming mixed. In this program the Abraham Initiatives operates the Mixed Cities Leadership Forum, comprised of 20 Jewish and Arab elected officials from all the Mixed Cities; and runs trainings for hundreds of city council staff.
