Mission Statement
SHARE is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1987 and is is based in Rockland County, New York with an affiliate in Mbita, Kenya. SHARE's mission is to save lives, foster a sustainable future, and vastly improve the quality of life of children and adults in African communities devastated by AIDS, life threatening diseases, and abject poverty. SHARE carries out its mission through a 3-pronged approach: education, health care, and economic sustainability. SHARE’s projects are focused in Kenya, in a region in critical need of help due to its extremely high incidence of AIDS, abject poverty, geographical remoteness, and lack of health care infrastructure. Our projects and intiatives are centered around the AIDS orphans and the community at large with a constant goal of creating sustainability.
About This Cause
Currently, our initiatives include: (1) Orphan Sponsorships Program: Over last 2 decades we have provided basic care ( health and social care) and education to thousands of orphans, many of whom have received university education and returned to the community to give back. The sponsorship is $500.00 for primary school children and $ 700.00 for high school. The Sponsors receive letters from the children and school reports so they can track progress. Currently we have 240 sponsored children. (2) Bereavement Counseling Training Program: This training is for school teachers and other adults who interact with the orphans. Several years ago we were approached by school principals as to their lack of skills and knowledge on how to interact with grieving orphans who have gone through unimaginable tragedies. For last 4 years we have been fortunate to send two experts in children bereavement to train teachers, social workers and clergy in helping these children cope with their grief. This has been extremely successful and in much demand. (3) Helping Babies Breathe Program: In Kenya, where 1 out of every 20 babies dies before the age of 1 year, the few minutes after birth are the most vulnerable. Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) is a program developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics designed to lower the infant mortality rate in developing countries. It has been well researched, and, in fact, our data is pooled with data world wide to study the correlation between the courses and the neonatal mortality rates. SHARE's Medical director has conducted training program for community health care providers to address the baby in its first few moments of birth to reduce the high infant mortality. Quarterly follow ups are conducted to ensure the training is being implemented. We are already witnessing that we are making an impact! We are coordinating with U. of Indiana in implementing this program and participating in data collection. We plan to continue and enhance the basic neo natal care. ( 4) Vocational School Program: While our orphans admission rate to university is almost three time higher (23%) than national average (8%), we need to provide sustainable vocation for the others; Currently we have enrollments in auto mechanic, tayloring and hair dressing. Going forward we would like to expand this program to include technology. ( Microsoft experts would be great partners) (5) Visiting Pediatric Dentists program: The community and children have never received dental exams - this program was started in 2015 and has been a huge success. We plan to make this a cornerstone of our Health care program. (6) Vision Care program. This is a new initiative and we are seeking funding for procuring the equipment to provide exams and corrective glasses to the children. Currently we have Optometrists and opthalmologist committed to donating their time and expertise. We believe $50 K will procure the equipment. (7) Women Empowerment Program: In 2016, in addition to all the aforementioned programs, we plan to build on our Women Empowerment Program by conducting workshops with the girls in our Orphan programs. the objective of this project is to better prepare the girls for sound decision making, self protection and preservation and providing career guidance to ensure sustainable lives. Our funding is primarily from individual donors and small family foundations. Other than a small staff (social workers and communications) in Kenya, we are all volunteers ensuring that 95+% of all the monies are spent on the mission. Our approach is to seek funding and volunteers with need expertise to go to Kenya and provide onsite se5vices that are designed to build sustainable communities.
