Mission Statement

Founded in 1991 as a dance company with a single dance studio at 890 Broadway, Gibney has transformed into a performing arts and social justice powerhouse. For over three decades, Gibney has persistently tapped into the vast potential of movement, creativity, and performance to effect social change and personal transformation. Gibney reaffirms its commitment to serving the performing arts community through its three organizational pillars: its innovative contemporary dance COMPANY, which performs commissioned works from internationally acclaimed and rising choreographers; impactful COMMUNITY initiatives that harness the power of movement to benefit survivors of intimate partner violence and address violence prevention among youth; and a two-location performing arts CENTER, housing studio rentals, dance training, digital media, and performance opportunities.

About This Cause

COMPANY Gibney's foundation is deeply rooted in its contemporary repertory dance company, which serves as a catalyst for the holistic development of its dancers. Through a comprehensive approach encompassing physical, intellectual, and interpersonal facets, Gibney empowers its dancers to explore their artistic, entrepreneurial, and socially conscious dimensions to the fullest. At present, Gibney Company is the largest female-led contemporary dance ensemble in the United States. Artistic Director Gina Gibney and Company Director Gilbert T Small II provide visionary leadership. COMMUNITY Gibney believes the arts play an important role in fostering vibrant communities. Gibney has always been committed to social advocacy, striving to empower artists as catalysts for positive change and community engagement by using dance as a tool for violence prevention and the cultivation of healthy relationships. Gibney's flagship community initiatives include Move to Move Beyond ®, a workshop series designed to empower survivors of intimate partner violence through movement-based interventions, and Hands are for Holding®, an innovative arts education program aimed at proactively addressing inter-youth violence. Key partners include the Office of Safety and Youth Development within NYC's Department of Education, the Mayor’s Office to End Domestic & Gender-Based Violence, Comunilife’s Life is Precious initiative, and Safe Horizon.
