Mission Statement
Cardinal & Gold Fund, Inc. was established in 1992 to provide for the education of underprivileged high school aged boys of the South Bronx and Upper Manhattan (i.e. Harlem) through its support of Cardinal Hayes High School by funding student scholarships and associated operating deficits.
About This Cause
Cardinal Hayes High School provides transformative academic programming for young men, predominately immigrants and men of color, in the South Bronx, one of the highest-need and lowest-resource communities in New York City. Both externally and internally, Cardinal Hayes faces myriad challenges that, as a mission-based educational community, the entire school works to overcome. The community of the South Bronx is characterized by high unemployment rates and low wages; high crime and poverty rates; and an undereducated workforce. In fact, the South Bronx is one of the poorest, most undereducated communities in the country. 81% of its population has only a high school education. Less than 60% of students in the Bronx graduate in 4 years, and high-school aged men in the Bronx are incarcerated at higher levels than other boroughs in New York City. In addition to these issues directly related to educational attainment, the South Bronx community that Cardinal Hayes serves is disproportionately affected by high poverty, crime, and drug abuse rates. Most households that Cardinal Hayes serves have parents who are working several jobs just to get by, with little time and energy left to focus on their child’s education. Many of these parents are recent immigrants, who do not have the academic background and/or the English language skills necessary to support their child’s education. Against this backdrop, Cardinal Hayes boasts a 99% graduation rate with a full NYS Regents diploma. Over 98% of its graduates go on to college level coursework and most importantly succeed in life long term.
