About This Cause

Iris House, incorporated in 1992, is a Harlem-based 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization named after Iris De La Cruz, a pioneer in AIDS and women's advocacy. Iris House is the country's first community-based organization whose services are designed specifically to meet the needs of women of color with HIV/AIDS and their families. The agency’s comprehensive continuum of services includes: HIV/STI/HCV referral, prevention, and education services (for 20 years); rapid HIV testing (8 years); food and nutrition services, including meals, pantry bags, cooking classes and nutritional counseling (22 years); harm reduction (8 years); supportive housing, including scatter site housing (19 years), and Health Homes Care Coordination (previously COBRA case management and Women’s Supportive Services Case Management, 22 years); mental health services, including individual and group counseling, crisis interventions and other psychosocial support services (22 years); and life skills training, including personal financial management, vocational education, and computer skills training (10 years). IH serves minority populations from across NYC, with a focus on Harlem and the South Bronx. Services of Iris House are individually planned and based on the client's needs. Beyond the linkage to treatment and medical support, Iris House assists clients in: coping with the myriad of complex problems associated with survival on a limited income; meeting the challenges of raising their children and planning for their future care; managing their illness through health education, mental health assessment and counseling; accessing treatment; providing nutrition counseling and food distribution, and stress management services. Iris House interventions are culturally and linguistically competent. The need for cultural and linguistic competence in HIV prevention, care and service provision is a high priority for Iris House. The staff is culturally diverse and able to converse with clients in four languages: English, Spanish, French, and Creole.
