Mission Statement
Big Apple Greeter’s mission is twofold: to enrich the New York visitor experience by connecting visitors with knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers, and to support mostly elderly New Yorkers from all boroughs to keep active and engaged in the community. In doing so, we promote New York City as friendly, inviting, and manageable; we bolster tourism and foster economic development, and create opportunities for New Yorkers to show pride in their city and to give something back to the city.
About This Cause
Big Apple Greeter, founded in 1992, enhances NYC's image globally by providing free 'greets' to travelers to NYC, and communicating to the world that our city is a safe, friendly, accessible & fascinating place to visit. We match approximately 7,000 domestic & international visitors with over 200 volunteers for free informal, unscripted walks in neighborhoods throughout the 5 boroughs, giving visitors the opportunity to see the city through the eyes of those who know it best – real New Yorkers; we maintain Neighborhood Information Profiles which visitors can use as free, downloadable self-guided walking tours; organize Greeter Outings to acquaint volunteers with neighborhood cultural sites that they can recommend to visitors, friends & colleagues; promote free weekly neighborhood events through social media, our website and news blasts to volunteers; work with journalists worldwide to generate free, positive press for NYC. As a result of our success, the Global Greeter Network has been spawned, with over 140 locations worldwide now participating with a similar 'greeter' profile.
