Mission Statement

Ensuring the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world.

About This Cause

Vaccines help protect all, including the most vulnerable. Despite major advances in HIV treatment and prevention, 2.1 million people contracted HIV and 1.5 million people died of AIDS-related causes in 2013. Infection rates continue to rise in specific regions and populations, three of five people living with HIV are not accessing antiretroviral therapy, and more than half of people living with HIV worldwide still don’t know they have it. Even with maximized existing treatment and prevention options, models foresee hundreds of thousands of new infections per year in low- and middle-income countries in the decades to come. A vaccine will be needed to fully and sustainably stop new HIV infections. A not-for-profit Product Development Partnership, IAVI works with academic, government, industrial and NGO partners to connect innovative science with clinical development capabilities, translating laboratory breakthroughs into promising vaccine candidates. Our community of scientists, advocates, clinicians and community workers extends far beyond IAVI staff to encompass partners across the world.
