Mission Statement
ExpandED Schools is dedicated to ensuring that all young people in New York City have access to enriching programs that affirm their identities, teach them valuable skills, and spark new possibilities in and out of the school day. Since our founding in 1998, when we created the nation’s first citywide system of K-12 afterschool programming, ExpandED has increased opportunities for more than a million students, tens of thousands of educators, as well as hundreds of schools and community-based partners.
About This Cause
ExpandED is a leading expert, supporter, and advocate for youth-serving programs in New York City. We ensure that young people have access to quality enriching programs led by well-equipped educators through: 1. Developing effective strategies for academic, social and emotional skill development through school-community partnership. In fiscal year 2023-24, we built the capacity of more than 1,587 programs to implement cost-effective quality services for K-12 youth in school-based programs. 2. Building the capacity of educators to collaborate with one another and work with young people effectively. Last year, we provided one-time and recurring professional development to nearly 2,500 educators—from principals to program directors, tutors to teaching artists— and hosted frequent exchanges among peers. 3. Advocating to our City, State, and national partners to scale and sustain quality youth-serving programs informed by lessons learned from youth, educators, and school-community partnerships. In fiscal year 2023-24, we participated in 18 coalitions and advisory groups and convened 54 engagements with decision makers at the local and state level on behalf of the communities we serve. ExpandED leads three core pillars of work grounded in the power of school-community partnership: career-connected learning, high-impact tutoring, and K-8 enrichment in STEM, literacy, and social-emotional learning. We directly supported more than 300 programs and 61,000 young people in school year 2024-25. -Pillar 1: K-8 Enrichment: We provide comprehensive program support to afterschool providers, empowering them to offer engaging STEM, literacy, and social-emotional learning opportunities. We are working to ensure the holistic development of students by strengthening the foundation for enrichment after school. -Pillar 2: High-Impact Tutoring (HIT): In 2022, we launched a new strategy to establish a citywide system of school-community tutoring partnerships focused on literacy and math. Through this initiative, students can grow socially, emotionally, and academically, benefiting from the expertise of both schools and local communities. At the same time, we are committed to supporting the professional growth of tutors by offering opportunities to enhance their skills, deepen their knowledge, and provide career pathways. -Pillar 3: Career-Connected Learning: We facilitate a seamlessly connected system of career-connected learning opportunities for young people in grades 6 through 12. By collaborating with schools and community partners, we enable students to gain practical experience and explore potential career paths. ExpandED Schools empowers educators and administrators of publicly-funded youth-serving programs to offer youth-centered, engaging, and academically-rich programs for K-12 students from traditionally underserved communities. 86% of students attending schools in our network identify as members of BIPOC communities (17% Asian; 23% Black; 43% Hispanic; 1% Native American, and 1% multi-racial) and 77% come from low-income households. We also prioritize other marginalized populations in our work by serving 13% students with disabilities and 17% English language learners. Educators have diverse backgrounds and professional experiences, and the majority live in the communities where they work and mirror the demographics of their students.
