Mission Statement
Mission: The Metropolitan Oval is a historic soccer facility and soccer academy dedicated to developing the highest-quality soccer talent in New York City while offering youth of all backgrounds the opportunity to play soccer in a committed environment through specialized training, team play, camps, and clinics. The Met Oval’s soccer facility, located on the Brooklyn-Queens border, was originally built in 1925 by immigrants from Germany and Hungary, and remains the most historic soccer facility in the United States. The Metropolitan Oval Foundation is a § 501 (c)(3) not-for- profit, charitable foundation incorporated in 1998.
About This Cause
The Vision: Continue the club’s historic focus on (1) providing top-level soccer development opportunities to low-income New Yorkers in a safe and committed environment; (2) preserving and improving the historic Metropolitan Oval facility; (3) helping players achieve higher-education opportunities. The Impact: We have been extremely successful in providing opportunities to excel, both on and off “the pitch” for children and young adults of all socio-economic backgrounds in New York City. The past twenty years has seen thousands of players compete for an affiliated Met Oval club. Approximately 75% of players come from immigrant families, and the Met Oval provides need-based financial support to players who cannot afford our already-modest fees: approximately 20% of our players receive scholarships. With personal development being a main goal, the Met Oval foundation has seen the vast majority of our 18 players from its last graduating class accepted at colleges. The Goal: With a well-established track record in training and educating youth and young adult soccer players, the Met Oval continues to expand and enhance its youth development programs. Under the direction of full time Director of Coaching, Filippo Giovagnoli and Sporting Director, Jeff Saunders, Met Oval has increased and improved staff. Met Oval current coaching staff’s experience in youth development and soccer is unparalleled in the region. We also continue to enhance our impactful scholarship program and offer more opportunities for young children to experience competitive team oriented soccer with a focus on personal development. In addition, we continue to improve our facility in order to provide our players with the best environment to reach their potential.
