Mission Statement

The Chocolate Factory Theater exists to encourage and support performing artists in their process of inquiry. We engage with a community of artists who challenge themselves and, in doing so, challenge us. We believe that by supporting the labor of artists and the public presentation of their work, we contribute to elevating New York City as a thriving and more equitable wellspring of ideas. The Chocolate Factory Theater is an artist-centered organization, built by and for artists. Co-founders Sheila Lewandowski and Brian Rogers began making work together in 1995 and quickly saw the need for a creative home to support their work and the work of fellow experimental performance-based artists. The Chocolate Factory therefore has grown and developed within and through a creative process that centers the development of new work, as guided by makers.

About This Cause

Since its first season in 2005, The Chocolate Factory has grown from an artist-founded, volunteer operation to an internationally recognized incubator for experimental performance; an established presence among the local, national and international theater, dance and performance communities, and is regularly featured and reviewed by major local, regional, national and international media. Our works have been awarded numerous OBIE and Bessie Awards; and continue to tour widely. Each year, The Chocolate Factory commissions 8-10 new projects by artists working in theater, dance, and performance; and offers 3-4 supported residencies for artists showing work in future seasons. The Chocolate Factory provides substantial resources to the artists it supports. A typical residency package includes 24/7 exclusive access to our space and technical equipment for a period of 4-6 weeks; commissioning funds (4,500 - $10,000 in FY18); and weekly salaries paid to all lead artists and performers for the duration of their residency and performance periods. We provide marketing, press, and administrative support, and high quality professional multi-camera photo and video documentation of all performances. These materials are provided to the artist free of charge, and are added to our growing online archive, which is free and available to everyone – more than 80,000 individuals view these videos each year. In July 2017, The Chocolate Factory completed the purchase of a new 7,500 sq ft permanent facility in the Dutch Kills neighborhood of Long Island City – a major accomplishment marking more than ten years of planning and effort.
