Mission Statement
The Studio’s mission is to create an environment with the purpose of nurturing theatre artists and audiences who value humanity, their own and others, as their first and most precious priority while providing art and education to the greater community.
About This Cause
Celebrating its 70th Anniversary in 2019, the Stella Adler Studio of Acting was founded upon Stella’s belief in the supreme seriousness of art, both its cultural significance and its power to affect social change. For the past seven decades, the Studio has enriched every part of the American theater, film and performing arts, training many of the brilliant artists of our time, including Marlon Brando, Alvin Ailey, Elaine Stritch, Robert DeNiro, and Benicio del Toro. The Studio uses the power of theater to contribute to positive social transformation, employs craft and art in service to communities and trains highly-skilled actors who understand their role as the voice of the people. We strive to democratize access to art and provide New Yorkers with meaningful artistic engagement. Our principal programs can be summarized in three categories: Professional Actor Training, Outreach and The Harold Clurman Art Series. Five hundred students annually participate in our world-class conservatory courses. Fifteen hundred students annually participate in free classes through the Stella Adler Outreach Division. TThe studio’s Outreach Division is currently the leading arts program provider at Rikers Island Correctional Facility where we serve over 800 inmates each year. The studio’s highly innovative Company Tour brings a 60-minute bare bones touring production of a classical play to severely underserved communities; the Company Tour has reached over 6,000 New Yorkers in six years. In addition, for the past 15 years, thousands of New Yorkers have attended free cultural events that emphasize public access to world-class artists and the potential for theater to influence society. Recent participants in the Art Series include Sonia Sanchez, Toni Morrison and Ta-Nehisi Coates who came together for a sold-out talk on Art and Social Justice on Broadway.
