Mission Statement

Surgeons of Hope strives to create a world in which every infant and child with a damaged heart has an equal opportunity to receive life-saving surgery. Board Co-Chair Eduardo da Cruz, Chief, Division of Pediatric Cardiovascular Critical Care at Boston Children's Hospital, writes, "Our goal is to bring hope to a new generation in countries emerging from poverty by establishing a high quality of care for their children while promoting education of health professionals in a modern environment.

About This Cause

Surgeons of Hope Foundation sends volunteer medical teams on life-saving missions to provide heart surgery for the children of Latin America. Surgical procedures that are commonplace in the developed world are out of reach to underserved communities in poorer countries. Surgeons of Hope Foundation is closing that gap by providing surgery to children, training and equipping the local medical team, and providing guidance and support on constructing new, modern pediatric cardiac centers on site. Our program in Latin American starting bringing pediatric heart health to Nicaragua, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere in December, 2008 where volunteer surgical/medical teams traveled from major U.S. and European university children's teaching hospitals to operate on infants and children who are suffering from heart defects and disease. As we implement our model, we train the local doctors so that, in time, they can perform the intricate pediatric surgery on their own. In December, 2013, our newly constructed, Pediatric Heart Center of Nicaragua opened its doors to welcome patients. The modern hospital features two operating rooms, a catheterization lab ($2M gift from Philips Medical), 8 ICU units, hospital rooms, diagnostic center, out-patient visit clinic. The local surgical team is operating with confidence and a local management team has been appointed. Surgeons of Hope will continue to send smaller training missions to fine-tune as needed, and continue to provide training and guidance. While continuing our commitment to Nicaragua, in (2016) we started our work in Costa Rica at the Hospital Nacional de Niños and conducted a mission to Peru, having met with Peruvian medical professionals and government officials and having identified the need among that country's rural poor populations for pediatric heart interventions. In 2019, we started our work in Paraguay at the Hospital General Pediatrico Acosta Ñu in San Lorenzo. In 2022, we conducted an assessment mission to Mexico at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez. In 2023 and 2024 we have intensified our programs in Paraguay and Costa Rica having as a result over 15 missions and several training programs. Although we are a small organization, our driving passion is to close the gap between pediatric care that is routinely available in the US, Europe, and other developed areas but now available in Latin American regions not so far away. Our valued donors who support our ambitious goals with one-time or recurring donations (even small ones) make a huge difference to us and to the kids who regain healthy hearts and the simple joys of childhood.
