Mission Statement
Rocking the Boat participants develop pride, purpose, and possibility by learning the unique and lifelong skills behind building and rowing wooden boats, sailing, and restoring the Bronx River. We create community, teach through transformative experiences, and make nature available to everyone, inspiring young people to determine their own future against a backdrop of systemic inequity.
About This Cause
By engaging in complex hands-on projects that produce practical and tangible results—full-scale wooden boats used to carry out environmental restoration projects that improve the health of the Bronx River—high school students from Hunts Point develop patience and perseverance to overcome challenges, becoming more resilient and resourceful in the process. Both in the workshop and on the water academic subjects come to life, giving new relevance to material taught in school, and introducing students to many possibilities for the future. Kids don't just build boats at Rocking the Boat, boats build kids.
