Mission Statement
The Italian American Museum is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cultural and educational institution promoting constructive pluralism by educating Americans to the heritage of Italian Americans and their European roots, values, language and traditions.
About This Cause
Through exhibitions, lectures, symposia, festivals and educational travel programs, the Italian American Museum explores the rich heritage of Italy and Italian Americans. It collects, preserves, and showcases notable contributions of Italians and Italian Americans to the American culture. In doing so the museum presents the individual and collective struggles and achievements of Italians and their heirs to the American way of life. The roots of the Italian American Museum can be traced to the seminal exhibit, "The Italians of New York: Five Centuries of Struggle and Achievement" held at the New York Historical Society in 1999. This highly acclaimed and successful exhibition attracted thousands of visitors. Drawing inspiration from the positive messages left in the exhibition guest book, the idea for a permanent exhibit or museum began to evolve. This idea was fulfilled on June 12, 2001 when Dr. Joseph V. Scelsa, as Founder and President received the Charter for the Italian American Museum from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York.
