Mission Statement
Daily Work's mission is to partner with people to find quality work by providing comprehensive employment services and fostering meaningful, supportive relationships. Our vision is that good work is foundational to financial sufficiency and a holistic life experience. We seek to build a community where everyone has the opportunities and connections to shape their future and thrive.
About This Cause
Demographic Information We specialize in assisting immigrants, people facing systemic barriers to employment, and people with complex needs using a person-centered, relationship-based approach. We provide services in the Twin Cities Metro with 66 percent of participants living in Ramsey County. Last year, job seekers came from 34 unique countries, with the greatest concentrations coming from Ethiopia (33%) and Afghanistan (14%). Seventy-two percent identified as immigrants and 30% reported being in the USA less than two years. Ninety percent self-identified as immigrants and/or Black, Indigenous, or People of Color and 94% of new intakes had incomes at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. Program Overview At Daily Work, we recognize that employment impacts every aspect of our lives, and vice versa. Therefore, our job seekers receive support that spans a wide range of needs and challenges—from job applications and negotiating job offers to addressing basic needs, transportation, immigration, legal concerns, and navigating complex programs, agencies, and technology. We have no eligibility criteria beyond having employment-related goals. We use a strengths-based, participant-driven approach to help people achieve initial financial stability through job placement and resource connections. We are dedicated to providing individualized support for those pursuing better employment and skill development, with our services available for as long as needed or desired. Our holistic services include: • One-to-one case management that supports people in obtaining quality work and addressing needs that impact employment and quality of life. Since most of our job seekers are English Language Learners and/or do not have proficient computer skills, consistent, one-to-one support is critical to their ability to access jobs and other critical resources. • Providing training and supervision to intern case managers to enhance their proficiency in the values, skills, and knowledge of the social work field, preparing them for professional practice. Both intern and volunteer case managers undergo regular training in cultural responsiveness and in recognizing and advocating for more equitable practices and systems. • Employer advocacy and education to raise awareness about systemic barriers to employment and co-create more equitable employment practices. • Our Technology Essentials Core Initiative (TECI) builds computer access and literacy, and provides a laptop, in-home set-up and computer skills coaching or classes. Equity Statement Racism and oppression are built into our society’s language, systems, and practices. We actively seek to dismantle racism, challenge discriminatory actions, reject oppressive practices, and reduce disparities in our community. We cultivate self-awareness and practice self-reflection in order to co-create an environment of radical acceptance. Commitment to Equity Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) are foundational to our work and we are deeply committed to anti-racism and the promotion of equity. In practice, this commitment means continually challenging our own thinking and striving to have a more inclusive worldview. We actively work to stop perpetuating systems of harm and oppression through self-awareness, self-reflection, and advocacy. We seek to create an environment of radical acceptance and extend this ethos beyond our organization. In addition, Daily Work is deeply committed to ensuring that those most impacted by our employment case management services are integral to our decision-making processes. We engage in practices that cultivate participant participation, trust, and engagement. Our services are guided and informed by each person's goals, preferences, and values. We listen deeply and honor the whole person within the context of their lived experience. We seek to amplify job seeker voices in our work through annual focus groups, bi-annual feedback surveys, and regular conversations. Our board of directors includes four people of color, including three who immigrated to the U.S. Adding more individuals with the lived experiences of our job seekers to both our staff and board is a high priority for us. Daily Work also strives to mitigate systemic barriers that limit access and opportunity for job seekers. Examples include barriers related to: discrimination, transportation, technology, child and health care, legal record, learning English, and immigration status. Our work is grounded in an awareness of the relationship between long-term poverty and un- or underemployment, and the disproportionate impact of both on BIPOC. Lastly, our organization is striving to build a shared, inclusive community rooted in intercultural learning and exchange, collective care, and transformational experiences that create cross-cultural relationships and deepen community connectedness for all. A key programmatic area that supports this vision is providing culturally responsive teaching and learning experiences for staff, interns, and volunteers. We support a pipeline for more intercultural representation in the social services field by providing social work internships to 10-12 students per year. On average, half of the interns we serve come from immigrant and/or diverse backgrounds. Our internships are critical to increasing the number of diverse social workers, who are vastly underrepresented in social services, and to supporting and nurturing their cultural responsiveness and readiness for practice.
