Mission Statement
Salmagundi [pronounced: sal-muh-guhn-dee] is a not-for-profit professional and social club, created in 1871 by artists and patrons to support one another. It is one of America’s oldest arts organizations with more than 1,100 current members throughout the United States and abroad.
About This Cause
Salmagundi originated as a sketch club in 1871 and was incorporated in New York State in 1880 as the Salmagundi Sketch Club (later dropping the word “Sketch”.) It was founded by artists and patrons with a mission to provide facilities for the exhibition of paintings, sculpture,s and other works of art, to bring together artists, and to improve the appreciation of art by the public. It became a 501 (c)(3) non-profit entity in the mid-20th Century. Salmagundi is one of the oldest professional arts organizations in the country. As an esteemed arts organization and gallery, we provide New York City and visitors from across the country and abroad with a unique cultural experience. Our historic home in Greenwich Village is a destination for artists and art lovers around the world. Our exhibitions and other activities offer a historical reflection of American Art and the City as a vibrant community of artists. Since its founding, Salmagundi has remained true to its earliest ambition to serve as a thriving center for American representational art, encouraging its creation, preserving its heritage, and making it accessible. Our permanent collection comprises over 1,500 works, spanning the full breadth of American Realism. Salmagundi’s unique collection of American realist paintings includes such famous artists as Thomas Moran, Louis C. Tiffany, William Merritt Chase, Norman Rockwell, and Emil Carlsen, among others. In 1917, the Club purchased its permanent home, an 1853 Italianate-style brownstone townhouse at 47 Fifth Avenue in Greenwich Village. In 1969, the building was designated a city landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. In 1975, Salmagundi was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Founded as a members club, Salmagundi membership is available at a low-cost to artists, art lovers, history buffs, and other individuals who want to support the arts as well as use the Club’s facilities and attend member events. The Club encourages young artists interested in representational art to apply for our junior memberships and scholarship programs to jumpstart their careers and begin showing in exhibitions. Mentoring our Junior and Scholarship colleagues gives us a foundation for our future.
