We offer a continuum of innovative programs ranging from early childhood and youth development to community support for adults and seniors.
About This Cause
Since 1916, we've been inspiring New Yorkers, helping families get strong and stay close, and leading bold charges for change. There is only one way to tell our story: people. In many ways, the story of our city is the story of us. Our stories of origin, our cultures and traditions, and our dreams for the future define us as individuals while uniting our families and communities. We grow when we are each inspired and thrive when we are all connected. That’s where we come in. The settlement house model came to New York when the city was at critical mass. People needed space for their dreams to grow and a place for their roots to gather. In 1916, Grand St. Settlement opened its doors, creating a community that would transcend place and time. What began as neighbors helping neighbors became a family. For 100 years, we have connected New Yorkers to opportunities that inspire, services that keep families strong, and programs that bring communities closer. Together, we have led bold charges for change, worked to overcome obstacles like isolation and exclusion, and fought to dismantle injustices and broken systems. For people and communities to be empowered, they need to be involved in decision-making. Deciding what opportunities, possibilities, or outcomes of we want to be a part, or make happen, is how we inspire agency, create shared ownership, generate advocacy, and how we launch action. Helping other people be a part of this process is at the center of why we give back: it feels good to help others. It’s also how we achieve social and policy change! Before dreams can grow big, they need room to take root. Supporting New Yorkers means working together to create communities that know what they need – and how to make it happen. We focus on creating safe and welcoming spaces that are as inclusive as they are diverse. Gathering places are the heart and the backbone of communities; they are where we distill our values and our dreams and where we organize and grow together. With one voice, whether it is one person speaking up or many people speaking together, change can happen. Advocacy can take many forms, whether we’re working with New Yorkers to influence systems, the way things are done for everyone in a community, school, or neighborhood, or helping people take action to effect the personal outcomes and changes they desire. To say that neighbors helping neighbors is the key to change is a bold statement. It's bold because it creates an opportunity for everyone to take ownership of change - and ultimately holds us all accountable to one another.
