Mission Statement
The Hebrew Free Loan Society (HFLS) fosters financial stability and opportunity by providing access to safe and affordable credit in the form of interest-free loans. HFLS loans enable borrowers to attend college, improve their job skills, start a business, or respond to unexpected financial challenges. HFLS is a non-sectarian lender, serving the New York City area since 1892.
About This Cause
Since our founding in 1892, we have provided more than $380 Million in loans to nearly 900,000 borrowers while maintaining a 99% repayment rate. As loans are repaid, our capital is lent out again and again, helping an unlimited number of people in perpetuity. For some of our earliest borrowers, a loan from the Hebrew Free Loan Society helped establish a pushcart venture that was a family’s way out of poverty. For others, our loans helped avert eviction or bought essential medical care. Although the world has changed, our mission has stayed the same.
