Mission Statement

Now entering our 75th year, Edwin Gould’s Community of Care addresses the complex, and often overwhelming, issues that confront society today. Rooted in a history of services focused on the needs of orphaned children during the early years of the twentieth century, our programming now includes a comprehensive array of services incorporating evidence-based practices to address those in need across the life-span. Our cornerstone foster care and adoption services are joined by community-based preventive services designed to assist at-risk families; programming focused on the prevention of domestic violence, intervention to assist victims of such violence, and advocacy toward policy change; legal services for victims of domestic violence; criminal justice services; school-based programs; health and mental health services; vocational, day habilitation, and economic empowerment programming; and group living environments for developmentally disabled adults who wish to live independently.

About This Cause

The Edwin Gould Community of Care extends throughout the five boroughs and Westchester County and includes four major program areas: Foster Care and Adoption Preventive Services STEPS to End Family Violence Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Services The Foster Care and Adoption Department ensures that each child in our care is placed in a safe and nurturing environment while awaiting a stable, loving and permanent home. We work towards reuniting children with their birth family or, when this is not possible, to find adoptive homes or independent living arrangements for young adults. Our Preventive Services Programs are free community-based services in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx designed to ensure that children and adolescents remain safe in their homes and to help prevent foster care placement for families in crisis. STEPS To End Family Violence is a holistic program of services for victims of gender-based violence with a focus on prevention, intervention, and policy advocacy. Our Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Services division provides both residential and day habilitation services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Recent Highlights: • 160 children were reunited with their biological families after foster care placement in Fiscal Year ‘14 • 76 children united with their forever-families through adoption in Fiscal Year ‘14 • 14 of our young adults in foster care are currently attending college • Only 15% of participants in the STEPS to End Family Violence Alternative to Incarceration program were rearrested – the national rearrest rate for women is 50% • Over 96% of teens in the STEPS to End Family Violence Peer Leadership program graduate from high school every year.
