Mission Statement

The Drama League advances American theater, film, television, and related live and online performance industries by providing life-long artistic resources for directors and a platform for dialogue about their work with audiences. Founded in 1916, we are one of the longest continuously-running arts service organizations in the country.

About This Cause

The Drama League’s programs enable directors to make the most powerful, impactful work possible and build thriving, sustainable careers. We fervently believe directors are storytellers in three dimensions -- the architects of stories that fulfill the essential human need to understand our world more deeply and imagine new possibilities. Through their work, directors enable all of us to explore the potential of human relationships, showing us possible futures. Yet despite being the nurturers, stewards, midwives and leaders of collaborative creation in a variety of fields, the critical role directors play in our society’s well-being is often invisible to audiences, and their profession is deeply under-supported in the field. For 40 years, we have provided industry access, mentorship, professional development, and production opportunities for directors through a comprehensive suite of programs known collectively as the Directors Project. Our opportunities include Fellowships for emerging directors; Residencies for director/creators who are developing their own work; Assistantships for early-career BIPOC directors; an after-school program for high school students interested in directing; workshops for directors at all levels to hone their skills; and a podcast that provides insight into the creative process. As technology expands the way stories can be told, we equip directors with skills to work across multiple mediums to reach ever-wider audiences. Our track record is unparalleled in the field - in just 40 years, Drama League alumni have received 24 Tony Award nominations and 9 wins, 10 Drama Desk Awards, 24 Obie Awards, Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmys, and more. Each season, 30% of announced Broadway and off-Broadway shows are directed by Drama League alums. In fact, over 100 alumni are in artistic leadership positions nationwide, and many more alums are serving as Assistant and Associate Directors across the country. Our alumni are a closely-connected community, and many of them credit The Drama League as a major turning point in their careers. As a cornerstone of our mission, we are committed to diversity, inclusion and belonging as components of a healthy and productive arts sector; to removing barriers to access and equity; and to providing opportunities for artists of all economic classes, races, abilities, genders and identities that have historically been marginalized in our field and our society. Underpinning our work is the support of our members, a community of theater audiences and professionals who share our commitment to the art form. Through their dedication and material support, members advocate our mission and help develop the careers of the talented directors we champion.
