The Zen Studies Society ("ZSS") is a non-profit religious organization incorporated on April 6, 1956, in the State of New York, for the study and practice of Zen Buddhism.

About This Cause

New York Zendo (“NYZ”) Shobo-ji, in New York City’s Upper East Side, opened in September of 1968. NYZ offers instruction and spiritual guidance in Rinzai Zen practice for the metropolitan New York community. The schedule includes daily meditation and chanting, all-day meditation sessions, weekend meditation retreats, poetry readings, art events, and lectures. NYZ also partners with outside organizations incorporating Zen meditation with Twelve-Step recovery programs, tai chi, yoga, poetry, calligraphy and arts workshops, and lectures on Buddhism. Dai Bosatsu Zendo ("DBZ") Kongo-ji is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monastery and retreat center situated on 1,400 acres of forests and meadows abutting State Park land. Its formal opening was on July 4, 1976. DBZ offers traditional Rinzai Zen practice for lay and ordained Zen students of all religious and cultural backgrounds. The schedule includes daily meditation, work, chanting, and intensive retreats. Students may become residents for any length of time, from a few weeks to many years. Introductory weekends are offered several times each year, with orientation for beginners. DBZ also rents its facilities to other groups with related interests through its Open Space Program, including yoga, bodywork, wellness, recovery, and the Zen arts.
