Mission Statement
The mission of the Double H Ranch is to provide specialized programs and year-round support for children and their families dealing with life-threatening illnesses. Our purpose is to enrich their lives and provide camp experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound. All programs are FREE of charge and capture the magic of the Adirondacks.
About This Cause
For 25 years the Double H Ranch has provided outdoor Adirondack adventures for children living with chronic and life-threatening illnesses all under the watchful eye of a dedicated team of medical professionals. Children with serious illness often miss out on the natural joys of childhood because much of their time is spent in hospitals receiving critical medical treatment needed to survive. During their time spent at the Double H Ranch they are able to escape from the confines of their illness and just be a kid. They are given the opportunity to make new friends; to swim and play; to experience adventure so that when they overcome their illness they are able to transition into happy and healthy adults. The Residential Summer Camp Program is the cornerstone of the Double H Ranch, which accommodates up to 126 children in each of eight sessions from June to August. Each camper enjoys a full range of camp experiences such as fishing, swimming, boating, horseback riding camping, high ropes course, children’s farm, sports, arts and crafts, theater, discovery science program, dances and carnivals. Other activities include campfires, sing-a-longs, barbecues, theme field days, cabin night, talent show, camp-wide exploration games, and storytelling. The Double H Ranch is located approximately 50 miles north of Albany in Upstate New York's Adirondack Mountains between Lake George and Lake Luzerne on the shores of Lake Vanare. The 320-acre property features native forests, streams, beaver ponds, and horse trails. The Ranch is comprised of 35 buildings, including 21 residential facilities, nine program buildings, and five administrative spaces. It has a mountain for skiing which is fully equipped with chairlift, snowmaking, and lodge; and, pastures for the many barn animals that call the Ranch home. The Ranch features a climate-controlled indoor swimming pool an equestrian program with indoor and outdoor riding, and the only Adaptive Winter Sports Program offered by any SeriousFun Camp. Children come to this pristine setting primarily from the Northeast - about 35 percent from the metropolitan New York/New Jersey area and 25 percent from New York’s Capital/Adirondack Region. Over the years, the Ranch has hosted campers from 30 States and 10 countries with various medical diagnoses, including cancer and/or leukemia, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia/bleeding disorders, HIV/immune disorders, neuromuscular disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and mitochondrial disorders. Over 400 seasonal staff and volunteers provide a 2:1 camper/staff ratio for regular weekly summer camp sessions. In the Adaptive Winter Sports Program, over 250 volunteers maintain a 1:1 child/instructor ratio. Double H Ranch provides children with an authentic Adirondack camping experience without compromising their medical needs. A medical facility known as “Paul’s Body Shop,” named for the co-founder’s love of racecar driving, is a fully equipped center that provides blood transfusions, pain management, respiratory treatments, blood counts, catheterizations, and the administration of medication. During the summer months, the infirmary averages 1,100 visits (not including routine scheduled care of campers) with a total of 12,568 medications passed each Summer. Fourteen staff nurses, ten volunteer nurses, and a volunteer doctor join the medical director and nursing director to provide round-the-clock medical coverage. A formal partnership with The Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center generously provides 24/7 physician coverage without cost to the Ranch. These dedicated pediatric hematology, oncology, and critical care specialists ensure that campers receive the highest level of quality medical care.
