Mission Statement
Publick Musick is a period-instrument ensemble based in Rochester, NY that enriches the cultural landscape of New York State by producing and presenting vibrant, historically informed performances of music from the 17th and 18th centuries and beyond. In our informal and engaging concerts, we perform well-known masterpieces, as well as sharing with our audiences the excitement of discovering and bringing to life unknown gems from the past. Our performers are nationally and internationally renowned Early Music professionals both from the local area and from further afield.
About This Cause
Publick Musick was formed in 1995 to perform music of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries in a historically informed manner, using period instruments and performing techniques. Deriving its name from The Private Musick, the ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists employed by King James II of England during the late seventeenth century, The Publick Musick has been most active as a chamber ensemble, but has also appeared as an orchestra and/or chorus. In 2000, co-founder Steven Zohn and The Publick Musick received the prestigious Noah Greenberg Award of the American Musicological Society for the project: “Music for a Mixed Taste: First Recordings of Telemann’s Early Trios.” The resulting CD was released by Centaur Records in 2002, and led to a European tour including a performance at the Magdeburger Telemann-Festtage. Under co-founder Thomas J. Folan, Publick Musick released recordings (on the Musica Omnia label) in 2006-07 of Bach Cantatas and Lutheran Masses, which have been featured on NPR's Performance Today, as well as on With Heart and Voice and Harmonia. Since 2011, Publick Musick has been under the direction of violinist Boel Gidholm and cellist Christopher Haritatos, and has performed several programs per year of instrumental and vocal/instrumental chamber music in Rochester and elsewhere in Western New York, featuring nationally and internationally renowned Early Music professionals. Highlights from the last few seasons include programs of rarely heard 17th-century German Christmas and Easter music; popular annual performances with the Italian Baroque Organ at the Memorial Art Gallery; a performance at the Eastman School of Music's Women in Music Festival of the music of Isabella Leonarda, a 17th-century Ursuline nun; a recital of the works of composers of African descent from the 18th through the 20th centuries; performances of chamber music of the Classical era using pianos modeled on those of the 18th century; and concerts of Bach Cantatas with Eastman's Craighead-Saunders organ in Christ Church Rochester. Live recordings and live performances are frequently featured on Classical radio station WXXI-FM. In addition to these concert performances, the ensemble has also done educational presentations/performances for area colleges and universities such as SUNY-Brockport, RIT, and Genesee Community College-Dansville, as well as at Rochester's School of the Arts, Nazareth Elementary School and the Eastman Community Music School.
