Mission Statement

Phoenicia Library is a public library serving the rural Catskills.

About This Cause

Phoenicia Library serves at the informal center of our rural town, "the pickle barrel" around which people gather. We provide books, movies and programs. Our programs range from the arts to help wit Medicare, health insurance, writing, and math. We also have a robust early literacy. We are known for being one of the first libraries to hold a ukulele lending collection in the United States, as well as for our unique Angler's Parlor which provides books on --and rods for --fly fishing. All programs are free and open to the general public. Phoenicia Library, chartered in 1959 with New York State, suffered a fire in 2011 that destroyed it's building. A bigger, better building was built entirely through local fundraising and support and grants. We are the first Passive House designed library in the United States, incorporating German technology that lowers are energy costs by 85% per square foot. The new building reopened in 2015. Currently, Phoenicia Library is experiencing an unprecedented soaring demand for its services from this community, which is far from other cultural centers. Our book circulation is the highest in our history, and our attendance at programs has grown exponentially. With this increase in demand and usage, Phoenicia Library relies on the generosity of donors to be able to serve the community. Ours is a community that struggles financially; over half our local children are eligible for free school lunch. Therefore, we are extremely grateful to the donors who give to us each year. Thank you so much !
