Mission Statement

Chautauqua Institution is a community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York state that comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. Over the course of nine weeks, more than 100,000 visitors will stay at Chautauqua and participate in programs, classes and community events for all ages—all within the beautiful setting of a historic lakeside village.

About This Cause

The Chautauqua Institution is a not-for-profit, 750-acre community on Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York State, where approximately 7,500 persons are in residence on any day during a nine-week season, and a total of over 100,000 attend scheduled public events. Chautauqua is dedicated to the exploration of the best in human values and the enrichment of life through a program that explores the important spiritual, social and political issues of our times; stimulates provocative, thoughtful involvement of individuals and families in creative response to such issues; and promotes excellence and creativity in the appreciation, performance and teaching of the arts. Chautauqua is the rarest of creatures, a community of art. That is to say, this is a place that still houses all of its own artistic companies, sustains all of the major art forms, intimately mixes professional training with broader arts education, emphasizes education and performance equally, and supports artists as treasured members of the community. Such an approach, such an environment, is virtually without parallel. Artists and audience members alike share the deep satisfaction of producing the artist experience. At a moment when our culture continues to reduce resources for arts education, Chautauqua provides a caring web of support for these students—a superb international faculty, a community where hundreds of students of art, dance, music, and theater live together, a curriculum steeped in the excellence of the past and alive in the vanguard of the present, and a supportive village filled with the life of the mind and the spirit. In order to enhance Chautauqua’s leadership in the training of young artists and to sustain the enrichment of those who teach and learn here, we must ensure that our students continue to rank among the best in the world, that the faculty who instructs them is comprised of individuals of outstanding artistic talent, and that the facilities they use are commensurate to their needs. This would not be possible without active philanthropy! The cultivation of exceptional programming and rich educational opportunities is a costly endeavor. Great strides are made to provide a high-quality Chautauqua experience to as many families, students and visitors as possible at an affordable cost. Philanthropy closes the gap between these real costs and the immeasurable value of the collective experience.
