Mission Statement
InterFaith Works of Central New York, through education, service and dialogue, affirms the dignity of each person and every faith community, and works to create relationships and understanding among us.
About This Cause
Founded in 1976, INTERFAITH WORKS is a nonprofit organization that builds bridges of understanding to affirm the dignity of all people in Central New York. InterFaith Works empowers people in need, including refugees, the elderly and the institutionalized through direct service and educational programs. Using the tools of deliberative democracy and cross-cultural dialogue, InterFaith Works also addresses deeply embedded social divisions leading to community action and change. The organization is committed to the belief that all people are deserving of dignity and respect regardless of ethnicity, faith tradition or social circumstances. The agency serves people of diverse races, ethnicities, faiths, ages, educational and socioeconomic backgrounds, gender, and sexual orientation through its three main programs: The CENTER FOR NEW AMERICANS, established in 1981, resettles refugees who have fled war, persecution and natural disaster in some of the most troubled places on earth. The program resettles between 300 and 600 refugees each year. In 2022, we also expect to welcome 120 evacuees from Afghanistan. The center provides crucial post-settlement services for up to five years to help refugees re-establish their lives and overcome the barriers necessary for successful integration in the U.S. These services include literacy, employment, housing, referral to medical care, and citizenship preparation. Syracuse is the second largest refugee resettlement city in New York state. The EL-HINDI CENTER FOR DIALOGUE & ACTION serves as a regional hub for constructive community discussion and dialogue-to-action programs. Its programs bring disparate groups together to foster mutual understanding and trust, and to find ways to work together for the betterment of the whole community. Programs within the Center for Dialogue & Action serve those of varying socioeconomic backgrounds, ages, faiths, and ethnicities. Each year, about 3,000 people participate in programming, which includes police-community dialogue, interfaith dialogue, ending racism dialogue, suburban-urban school exchanges, and Seeds of Peace clubs. Action projects include: Pantry Partners, Community Gardens, Chaplaincy in hospitals, nursing homes and correctional facilities, and Vaccination. SENIOR SERVICES coordinates the Senior Companion Program, which provides companionship and advocacy to frail seniors. It is a free program serving 180 clients weekly and helps to keep these vulnerable elders socially engaged and living independently in their own homes. In addition, a One to One Program is a volunteer-based program providing friendship to “elder orphans” in nursing homes who have no regular visitors.
