Mission Statement
The St. Patrick Hunger Project was formed in 2005, and was inspired by An Gorta Mor in Ireland. An Gorta Mor, in Irish, means the Great Hunger. It was a result of the potato famine, and the legislated starvation of the Irish by the English. Tens of thousands of Irish people died, and thousands more emigrated to the USA as a result. The Hunger Project is our way of "giving back" because the reason most of the Irish are here is as a result of An Gorta Mor. We firmly believe that no one in our community should have to go to bed hungry - EVER -- especially the children. With the downturn in the economy the past several years, there are more people in our community in danger of not knowing where their next meal is going to come from. It is no longer a problem of just the "poor" or poverty stricken - it has bridged over to the upper classes as well. Many, many people, possibly even your neighbors, are now living paycheck to paycheck & are only one paycheck away from having to visit a food pantry. The St. Patrick Hunger Project accepts both monetary and food donations. The majority of the monetary donations are passed on to the Food Bank of CNY. The Food Bank of CNY has the purchasing power across the country to purchase approximately 3 meals with every dollar it receives. Last year, as a result of our fund raising efforts, we were able to present a check for $20,000 to the Food Bank of CNY. The food donations are given to the Interreligious Food Consortium, which supplies local pantries with food when their reserves are running low. We accept all non-perishable items. Please make sure when donating a food item, it is something you would like to eat. Unfortunately, when donating food items some people tend to "clean out their cupboards" by donating old and/or expired items. Please know that the St. Patrick Hunger Project is a 501 (c) (3) is a not-for-profit, and all donations are 100% tax deductible. If you would like a form for your donations, please just let me know. Also, I believe it is important that you know that every cent of a donation to the Hunger Project is passed on to hunger-related agencies, i.e., the Food Bank of CNY, Interreligious Food Consortium, etc. There are no administrative costs associated with the Hunger Project, and all administrative expenses are absorbed by the Syracuse St. Patrick's Parade Committee, Inc.
