Mission Statement

The mission of The Hancock Community Education Foundation is to provide educational support from birth to post graduation and to encourage a greater percentage of students to go on to higher education.

About This Cause

The Hancock Community Education Foundation was founded in 1999 by Ron DeLuca, Wellington Lester, and George Elwood as a New York State not for Profit Corporation. The Foundation received its 501 (c) (3) status from the IRS in February 2000. Or organization is made up of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, 6 Board Directors, one full time Executive Director and 15 part time staff who run our programs. The Community has responded generously to the support of the foundation's programs for the children of Hancock, as have numerous private foundations. Since the Foundations beginnings in the year 2000, it has invested over $2,500,000.00 in Hancock, $762,850.00 of it in scholarship grants and the rest in educational support programs for students and adults. With your support we will continue to help build a better future for our children. Programs of the Hancock Community Education Foundation Hancock Community Children’s Center-Birth to 3 years Services: Provides babies and toddlers with the best possible start in a unique environment designed to stimulate the child's creativity and learning. For the parent it provides networking opportunities with other parents, as well as, access to free parenting programs though our community partners. Record of achievement: Children who attend our center are better prepared for the next level of education and have the love of stories and books. These children move on to the preschool program and parents are more invested in their child’s education. Hancock Community Preschool -3 to 5 years Services: Hands-On Learning Activities, Arts and Crafts, Language Activities, Music and Movement and Science. Record of achievement: Hancock Central School teachers can clearly identify, and agree, that the students who have attended the preschool program are more prepared for the beginning of their formal education than their peers who did not attend. The K-4th Grade After School Program Services: Academic enrichment program that provides homework help, tutoring, state mandated test preparation and enrichment activities, hosted in a well supervised, safe environment. Record of achievement: Improves school performance, increased self-confidence, state mandated test results and the development of life skills. 89% of Hancock students who attended college, technical school or enlisted in the military from 2011-2016 were participants in the after school program during their school career. 94% of these students graduated college/technical school or are still enrolled in college. The 5-9th Grade After School Program Services: Academic enrichment program that provides homework help, tutoring, state mandated test preparation and enrichment activities, hosted in a well supervised, safe environment. Record of achievement: Improves school performance, increased self-confidence, state mandated test results and the development of life skills. Scholar of the Month Program Services: To encourage saving for college, grants of $100 are awarded to an elementary and middle school student each month and held in trust. Record of achievement: 94% of the students who have received the award have gone on to college, military, or technical school. American Dream Challenge Services: To encourage students in grades 3-10 to aspire to college. Students write an essay on the importance of education. The 3rd grade winner receives a $50.00 Scholarship. The amount increases by $50.00 for every grade thereafter. Record of achievement: Students aspire to do better in school and to attend college. College Scholarships Services: Aids students attending a two or four year college, or a two year technical school with tuition support based on rigorous grade and need criteria. Record of achievement: Since 2000 awards total $828,850.00, increased college attendance rates from less than 30% to 79%. College Transition Program Services: Students are matched with a faculty mentor who meets with the student throughout their senior year and continues that support as they begin their college careers. Record of achievement: Decreases college dropout rates. Summer Enrichment Program for grades K-9th Services: 4 week program provides instruction in English, Math and activities in Gardening and Cooking. Weekly field trips to Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty, Baseball Hall of Fame, Roberson Science Museum and more! Record of achievement: Eliminates summer learning loss in the summer of 2015 82.5% of the students who participated maintained or increased their reading levels according to pre and post testing. Family Learning Center Services: Provides programs and activities that encourage parental and community involvement in the education of our students. Programs are held at different times throughout the year at a variety of community venues. Record of achievement: Increases parental involvement and support of their children. Robert W. Nichol Nature Preserve and Science Center Services: An environmental education center for students, parents, and visitors to study the ecology of wetlands, local plant, and wildlife. Record of achievement: Science Center opened in April 2015 and provides monthly programs and workshops.
