Mission Statement
The mission of Girls Incorporated® of Long Island is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold. We provide school and community based programming that serves the unique needs of girls, ages 5-18, living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Girls Incorporated® of Long Island is dedicated to the advocacy of gender equity for all girls in all areas of their lives. Through participation in our programs, girls learn the skills to become leaders in their communities, leading to exponential change. We know that by supporting girls in their educational and professional pursuits, we are participating in real community-wide change in Long Island. According to girleffect.org, improving a girl's life through education, health, and safety has a positive ripple effect. An educated girl will reinvest 90% of her future income in her family, compared with 35% for a boy. Girls Inc. curricula are age-specific, research-based, and designed to equip girls with the tools to address the above issues, helping girls to achieve academically, gain financial literacy, lead healthy and physically active lives, and manage media messages. Current research shows that although more girls are enrolling in STEM higher education programs, many are not completing them. This needs to be addressed. Girls Inc. National focuses on empowering young women through comprehensive programs that address the unique challenges they face. The Girls Inc. Experience is a comprehensive research-based program that bridges learning and skills gaps between academics and life, while reinforcing the academic process, emphasizing key areas such as empowerment and leadership, STEM Education, College and Career Readiness, Economic Literacy, Advocacy, Workforce Development as well as mind and body wellness. We provide skills, access, opportunities and tools to help girls reach their full potential and create a new generation of leaders. Girls Inc. provides a distinct experience to combine the right people, with the right programs in the right environment, which directly addresses the unique needs of girls, offers interactive-hands on experiences and provides them with essential tools and life skills to empower them to be strong, smart & bold. Girls Inc. offers a holistic approach that addresses the whole girl, physically, socially, emotionally and academically, helping them to successfully navigate the world. Our multi-programming model includes 8 to 10-week research-based core curricula, which addresses specific issues related to education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), economic and media literacy, and career development) health and safety (substance abuse, violence and pregnancy prevention, as well as creating healthy lifestyles) and community action (leadership and community engagement). Through our school-based programming, girls participate in 30 weekly sessions between October and May for ongoing engagement and continuity of exposure. Our trained facilitators deliver Girls Inc. Experience curricula in 60 to 120-minute sessions with healthy snacks.
About This Cause
Girls Incorporated® of Long Island was founded in 2005 as an affiliate of the nationally recognized Girls Incorporated®, a non-profit organization serving only girls with roots dating back to 1864. The founders included a diverse group of women who saw the need to bring gender-specific programs to the girls on Long Island in order to foster equity and hope for the future. Girls Inc. is a leading expert in all things girls. With 160 years of service as the preeminent girls' leadership organization, Girls Inc. of Long Island helps girls reach their full potential. Through the Girls Inc. Experience - with its combination of trusted mentors, pro-girl spaces, and programming - girls gain the confidence and skills to make good choices, build skills to thrive, and take on leadership roles. With this combination of support, guidance, opportunities, and programming, girls develop confidence and competencies that build a new generation of leaders. Donate to Girls Inc. today to help achieve our shared vision of powerful girls in an equitable society. Together, we can inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold. The issues consistently identified by community leaders as a priority include girls' self-esteem and sense of worth, physical and mental wellness, substance abuse avoidance and awareness and avoidance, media and financial literacy, and raising girls’ enthusiasm for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) fields. Post-pandemic, we are seeing increased expressions of mental wellness challenges and an increased need for the encouragement of resilience and grit through the kinds of services we provide. The need for continuous support is crucial and Girls Inc. is working to maintain and increase our sustainability to continue to serve the increasing needs of girls in this community. Through community partnerships, we help girls to achieve their full potential making their future brighter. We are particularly invested in reaching girls who are falling through the cracks, and providing them with a safe space for them to grow up. We engage with them, their social workers, guidance counselors and their families. Although we will always be open to any girl who wants to participate in our programs, our intention is always to engage girls who fall under the radar in school: the girls who are underperforming, or who demonstrate behaviors or attitudes that indicate any need for concern or intervention, and girls whose families express a desire to help them to support the achievements of their daughters. We recognize that both districts are composed of families who range from impoverished to affluent; we see girls from all parts of this spectrum benefiting from the programs that Girls Inc. offers. Our mission is to empower every girl to feel that her goals are attainable, both through the knowledge and opportunities presented to them, as well as from the mentoring relationships that develop with their facilitators and influential women from the community who are engaged and invested in the success of these girls. Our presence in our girls’ lives has never been more necessary. We are facing an unprecedented public health crisis that significantly impacts the daily lives of our girls and will continue to impact their future. Though we may be speaking with our girls through the computer, we are still able to reach them and address their evolving needs with our programming. We know that by supporting girls in their educational and professional pursuits, we are participating in real community-wide change in Long Island.
