Mission Statement

Using evidence-based systems, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg provides a positive, fun, and stable environment for youth that produces winners, leaders, and role models who make a lasting impact within our community.

About This Cause

For nearly 14 years, Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg has been at the forefront of youth and character development, working with young people from disadvantaged economic, social and family circumstances. The Club has actively sought to enrich the lives of girls and boys whom other youth agencies have had difficulty reaching. We are dedicated to ensuring that our community’s disadvantaged youngsters have greater access to evidenced-based systems, quality programs and services that will enhance their lives and positively shape their futures. By implementing two evidenced based systems, Be GREAT: Graduate and Gang Prevention Through Targeted Outreach, the Club offers young people what they need and want most: adults who respect and listen to them; a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves; and interesting, constructive activities that channel youthful energy into challenging pursuits. Through the ever increasing high school drop out rate for African-Americans coupled with the frequency of crime reported in the downtown area, it has become increasingly evident that the city needs a facility specifically geared towards the needs of teens. This facility would be a place where Lynchburg area teens can have positive social opportunities, develop employability skills, enhance their academic skills and improve their fitness and health. Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lynchburg has both the competency and the desire to expand and enhance the current recreation and performing arts programming to better meet the needs of the local youth. On any given day, up to 160 youth currently can participate in programs, activities and services provide by the Club. Membership costs just $10 per child (capped at $20 per family). The actual cost to provide services to one child for one year is closer to $2100. Remaining funds must be raised through individual, corporate and foundation gifts. Although part of the larger Boys & Girls Clubs of America organization, no funding is provided to the Club from the national organization. Further, the Club is NOT a United Way agency. We rely on individual gifts, as well as corporate and foundation support. The Club boasts a 95% retention rate and routinely has an admission waiting list.
