Mission Statement
The Trust’s mission is to: (a) ensure the preservation of the Christ Church properties, including the engagement of the public in the ongoing historical and contemporary legacies that live here; (b) remain a focal point and source of inspiration in Old City Philadelphia; and (c) deepen and spread these legacies through public and private education and events to a broad audience including historians, students and the multiple communities of interest that use Christ Church’s properties as a place for worship, community building, civic engagement, study, personal growth and artistic expression. The Trust’s vision over the next six years is to develop and implement a vibrant collaborative educational program, a strong fundraising plan, and to complete preservation projects that will place Christ Church at the forefront of historical places in the Philadelphia community, the broader region and the country at-large.
About This Cause
Constructed in its current configuration between 1727-1754, Christ Church, with its iconic tower and steeple, has long been considered the finest example of Georgian church architecture in the United States. Its sanctuary and grounds have been the site of pivotal historical events and host to leaders in the unfolding story of American democracy, from colonial times through the American Revolution and the birth of our democratic republic to the modern era. The leading men and women of the day who worshipped at Christ Church led compelling lives whose stories are as interesting, instructive and relevant today as they were in the 18th century. The stories of Benjamin Franklin, Francis Hopkinson, Robert Morris and Betsy Ross, for example, provide important lessons for leadership, moral courage, vision, life and death, and family and civic engagement that remain vital to the present-day character of our community and nation. From its 17th century inception, Christ Church has assumed a leadership role in Philadelphia and an influential role in our country’s history. Christ Church’s Burial Grounds is the resting place of many renowned Colonial leaders, including seven signers of the Declaration of Independence: Benjamin Franklin, Francis Hopkinson, Benjamin Rush, George Ross, Joseph Hewes, Robert Morris and James Wilson. In 1965, Christ Church Preservation Trust was established as a secular nonprofit to manage and maintain the historic Christ Church campus. With the re-opening of the Christ Church Burial Ground in 2004, the Trust began managing tourism, education and archival programs. That same year, the Trust’s board approved a $10 million campaign to achieve the following objectives: a twenty-year preservation plan for Christ Church; preservation, accessibility and HVAC improvements to the adjacent Neighborhood House; and an increased focus on tourism and public programs. In 2013, the Trust undertook a strategic planning process that shifted its mission to include support for communities that utilize the Christ Church properties. In this capacity, the Trust expanded the scope of its mission to include not only educational and archival activities but also the Neighborhood House Arts Program.
