Mission Statement

Water for South Sudan delivers direct, transformative and sustainable quality-of-life service to the people of South Sudan by efficiently providing access to clean, safe water and improving hygiene practices in areas of great need.

About This Cause

Water for South Sudan (WFSS) drills water wells in the remote regions of South Sudan. Since 2005, we have drilled more than 640 new wells in South Sudan, often bringing the first fresh clean water to a village. Having fresh, clean water every day eliminates many causes of disease. Not having to walk for miles each day allows more freedom for girls and women. Girls can often attend school; women can create small gardens and cottage industries. Water brings life to these villages. People can remain in their village year-round. Homes and schools can be built; markets spring up. Medical clinics can be established. WFSS estimates each new well serves 1,000 - 1,500 people. In addition to new water wells, WFSS repairs older wells, conducts hygiene, water-user, and pump mechanic training, constructs water storage and distribution systems and latrines, and provides nutrition education to pregnant and nursing mothers. WFSS is an official partner of UNICEF, The Carter Center, and Norwegian Church Aid. Water for South Sudan was founded by former "Lost Boy of Sudan" Salva Dut, whose true story was told in the book "A Long Walk to Water" by award-winning author Linda Sue Park.
