Mission Statement

Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty before it is transferred to yet another generation, by building more educated and productive communities. Our vision is to enable every child to go to school and achieve the level of education they desire.

About This Cause

Empowerment International, (EI) has been working in Nicaragua since 2004. EI offers a community-based holistic educational program to children and their families in three extremely impoverished communities in Nicaragua. Most of the families live on less than $2/day and most adult members of the community have an average of a third-grade education and do not understand the value of the long-term benefits of educating their children. The goals of EI's program are to instill the value of education in the families and children and to remove the physical and emotional barriers that prevent regular attendance of school. This is done through daily home visits where parents are encouraged to send their kids to school and are mentored on how to enhance their children’s education. In addition, during these visits counseling and emotional support are provided to help facilitate solutions to barriers, physical or otherwise, that prevent children from attending school. Another unique aspect of EI is the after school peer tutoring sessions that are held daily for primary school kids. These sessions are run by EI's secondary school students under the guidance of an EI staff member. While this program helps only the younger children with school, it also benefits the teen tutors by raising their self-esteem and offering them an opportunity to give back. EI provides material support as well such as mandatory school uniforms, shoes, supplies, tuition, and transportation for rural high school students. The program participants have access to tutoring, a computer center, a small library and research center, several enrichment activities, and professional counseling. Results: Since 2009 EI has achieved a program (and school) retention rate of over 95% and the percentage of students that go on from primary school to secondary has been over 90% and rising! Currently, EI has 12 students in the university that started with EI in Primary School. Also, EI has had two students graduate from the university. They are employed as a university professor, a 5-star hotel manager, pharmacist, doctor of optometry, business administrator, graphic designer, social worker, and community development specialist.
