Hester Street is an urban planning, design and development nonprofit that works to ensure neighborhoods are shaped by the people who live in them. We offer planning, design and community development technical assistance to community-based organizations, government and other agencies. Our goal is equitable, sustainable and resilient neighborhoods and cities.
About This Cause
Hester Street is an urban planning, design and development nonprofit that works to ensure neighborhoods are shaped by the people who live in them. We provide technical and capacity-building assistance to community-based organizations, public agencies and private firms on land use processes, neighborhood planning and public and private community development projects. Our goal is equitable, sustainable and resilient neighborhoods and cities. Founded in 2002, the HST team works alongside our partners and their constituencies to develop transformational places -concrete resources that maximize long-term community benefit- through transformational processes -inclusive, innovative, community-driven processes that develop skills, build power and strengthen community resilience. We produce projects and plans that result in improved access to housing, health and wellness, social cohesion, economic opportunity and equity. Our team of architects, planners, designers and developers pairs technical expertise with a deep understanding that the most successful projects and plans are grounded in local needs and informed by community priorities. We specialize in crafting innovative, project-specific and data-driven engagement tools and strategies to ensure that community members are equipped with both the information and inspiration they need to play a meaningful role in important planning, assessment and decision-making processes. We are expert in community-driven data collection, analysis and design for access and inclusion. Our projects serve 3 programmatic areas: Urban Planning + Community Design: We integrate spatial data analysis and technical planning skills with inclusive community engagement for participatory planning processes. We produce maps, activities, graphics and toolkits to gather and share information and inspire action plans and implement built environment projects for equitable communities. Community Development: We provide technical assistance to plan projects, conduct spatial needs assessments, perform zoning and site analyses, identify sites, facilitate property acquisition, assemble financing, manage design and construction and guide stakeholders through a participatory design process for community-owned assets. Capacity Building: We facilitate Train-the-Trainer and other workshops and support project planning and implementation for community-based organizations. We support municipalities’ efforts for inclusive planning and development processes, analyzing existing practices and policies alongside demographic and spatial trends and designing inclusive processes that are data- and community-driven.
