Mission Statement

The mission of PDX Jazz is to evolve the art of jazz by engaging our community, celebrating live performance, and enhancing arts education.

About This Cause

Portland Jazz Festival Incorporated dba PDX Jazz, a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit, is the largest organization presenting jazz performances and associated education programming in the Pacific Northwest. We are building the future audience for jazz - today. This initiative is driven by immersive engagement opportunities that hold relevance across our dynamic populace. Jazz is an art-form that is evolving and flourishing worldwide amongst a young, ethnically, culturally, and socially diverse population. PDX Jazz inherently honors and respects the tenets of jazz across all our programming. However, to achieve our diversity, inclusion, and equity goals, and audience growth goal, we must, and we are, embracing jazz as it exists today; a multi-cultural art influenced by a myriad of contemporary musical genres. Our programming is a responsive and reflective kaleidoscope of current events in society and accompanying artistic developments in the world of jazz. Our annual programming is anchored by the Portland Jazz Festival, a two-week celebration, featuring over 75 events, occurring in February-March. In addition to the Festival, PDX Jazz produces approximately 30 headline concerts each year outside of Festival programming. Our music programming reaches an audience of 50,000 patrons annually. Audience data includes the following figures: 21% identify as persons of color, 25% are under 45 years of age, 2% identify as LGBTQ+, 5% identify as disabled, and 42% identify as female. PDX Jazz education programs fill the gap of reduced funding, and in many instances no funding for arts education. Each year, we provide hands-on outreach to under-served students, with a focus on Title 1A funded schools. During the 22-23 school year we reached 6 Oregon counties including Columbia, Lincoln, Multnomah, Tillamook, Washington, and Yamhill counties, and our programming was delivered in 10 school districts including Beaverton School District, Clatskanie School District, Forest Grove School District, Newberg School District, Hillsboro School District, Lincoln County School District, Portland Public Schools, Reynolds School District, Tigard-Tualatin School District, as well as Oregon Youth Authority campuses. Our education programs extend across the entire student body, emphasizing an interdisciplinary appreciation of jazz from a historical, sociological, and cultural perspective. Among the students served: 95% receive free/reduced lunch, 50% are persons of color, 26% are English Language Learners and 19% are special needs children. PDX Jazz education programs are provided at no-cost to participants including all instruction and supplies. Our role as a community leader includes fostering social equity and healthy cultural nonprofits. PDX Jazz is a long-term partner to Juneteenth Oregon, financing and producing the annual event. We also financially support and partner with Artichoke Music, Jazz Society of Oregon Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, Montavilla Jazz Festival, PHAME, Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble and Shaun Keylock Company to deliver joint programming. We expand the audience for jazz via audience engagement on our content rich website reaching users in 156 countries, our e-newsletter, and a robust social media audience, as well as the PDX Jazz Radio Hour on KMHD 89.1 FM.
